Hi All - Thinking of changing the wheels on my E55 Estate. It currently has Style V 22 spoke Turbines fitted, which I inherited with the car. I was not too keen on them at first but they grew on me quickly and as they are 0.5" wider (8.5" / 9.5") than standard give the car a nice slightly more muscular look.

The wheels are not in bad nick, but I have been thinking about getting them refurbed, but just not got round to it and it will be a real hassle not having the car for a week or so. So should I just get a new set of wheels? There are some about advertised as genuine AMG refurbed etc which are a fair bit less than buying new. What styles do you all think suit the car the best? Must be genuine AMG and 18" as I would want to swap my tyres over.

Hi simon, not a fan of the turbines tbh, the 19 " split IV`s in titanium are the best ones for the w211 IMO ;) i am a little biased tho!

i would keep the turbines as they are and use them as your winter rims.

Hi Alps,

Yes I saw the pics of your car, they do look the business, but like I said Ideally I want to swap my tyres over as they are all good, other than one which is currently winging it's way over from Germany to replace one of the rears that punctured last friday.

I am a bit sad but I wanted all the tyres to match and they are Dunlop Sport Maxx's, which Dunlop have now replaced with Sport Maxx Gt's, couldn't find them anywhere so ordered one online from UK company but being sent from dunlop Germany!!! Actually it was the puncture that has really prompted me to think about changing, as when I removed the wheel I could see there was a very slight dent on the inside rim edge, this wasn't caused by the puncture as when I looked back at the previous service notes it was noted then which was prior to me having the car. The wheel is not buckled and has never caused any vibration but it has just made me think again about changing.

I think it is really down to the twin spoke Style IV as you originally had on your car or the solid spoke Style III. Both I think are available in the same slightly wider pattern to match my turbines, which I think I would prefer.

Hi Simon

thanks for the comments! out of the 2 mentioned, go for the style IV`s, they are a nice looking rim, mine are going back on the car either this weekend or next.

im sure the current rims are fine even with a small dent., maybe not worth changing until summer?, im thinking of possible skidding and kerbing over winter! :)

I prefer the std 18" wheels to be honest on the E55's.

There are a few sets of Style III's on ebay at the moment, all saying genuine refurbed and prices seem pretty good. the only thing is they have been refurbed with a polished rim, which while they may look good are vulnerable as mine are with the corrosion under the lacquer. I'm going to get in touch with the sellers and may go for them, could then either keep my turbines as spares or sell them as they are in pretty good nick besides the small dent which can't be seen once on the car anyway so not a problem. Can't decide what to do as didn't really want to spend any more out at the moment, as already in for a new tyre, just paid for Tier 1 and service coming up!! Bloody Car - LOL!!!!

lol, yeah thats car ownership for you!

be carefull, make sure the style 3 you get are the correct offset and the 14mm bolts fit through the lugs! as i have seen some that are made for 12mm bolts only.

They say they are from SL which has same offsets as my current turbines so should be ok. But thanks yes I will check.

The more I think about it it may be best to get new wheels after the worst of the winter.

My wheels have the pressure sensor valves, does anyone know if these are easy to remove and swap onto new wheels, I assume it's just a simple case of unscrewing etc.... or does it need specialist attention?

they screw off, best to replace the valves tho as the corrorode over time and can leak.

I'm getting my turbines refurbed next week - into the place in the morning, ready late afternoon, so only off the road (if that) one day.

Using the local branch of this place - Alloy Wheel Refurbishment | Refurbish Alloy Wheels | Refurbish Wheels | Alloywheel Repair | Refurbished Alloy Wheels - been to see them, superb work so no worries there.

I'm going for one of the chrome finishes & doing away with the diamond cut - it looks nice when the laquer is good, but that isn't for long in this climate & the dreaded white fuzz spreads underneath.

Cheers - That site looks pretty good, I'm surprised they can do them in a day though. None that close to me unfotunately. Would be interested in seeing some pics once they have been done and your thoughts.

I'll post after the event with pics - it's booked in next Thursday, so a week to wait !

as promised, a couple of images of the refurbed wheels done yesterday.

Dropped off at 9.00am picked up at 5.00pm.

The finish is "black chrome" - a two colour job.

The pics don't do justice - they actually look much better than this

Cheers for the pics - they look nice!! Seems like that finish would be a good compromise between a full silver paint job and the paint and machined finish that the wheels have as standard (which as we all know just doesn't last). It's hard to tell from your pics but does the finish graduate into a metalic black towards the inside of the wheel?

Cheers Simon
