Just specced up a new 5 series and a new E class. Amazing how close prices are. You would have thought that there was/is price collusion!

You don't have to go past this bit to see which is the better car, BMW 8 speed Auto, 14 more bhp, 0.7 sec quicker, 12% better fuel economy, lower emission less tax (Road and Company car)

Come on MB get your act together and keep up

So the BMW is more powerfull, faster, more efficient and has a lower starting price.
MB sales staff will have to work hard I believe.

BMW also offers two service packs for 60k miles/5 years:

Service Inclusive: £350
Service Inclusive Plus: £1395

I would have thought a fairer comparison would have been E220 CDI SE vs 520d SE with no options? Both are fairly similaraly equiped with some form of leather and a 6-speed box, and will likely be the volume sellers.

Now compare servicing package costs.

The comparisons are specific to my tastes and desires, but also shows equivalent specs under the "To BMW/MB Spec" sub totals.

one reason why i would give mercedes the vote is statistically, their depreciation is slower, and BMW have really been messing around with their pricing discounts, that their values dont hold any credible value...

I dont personally like the new e class, but if choosing between the two, id choose the merc...

depreciation is an important part of the buying process, the difference in acceleration, and fuel efficiency is quote low down, as it is rarely you get to accelerate to 40, let alone 60..

I agree with you on the depreciation aspect, but would also argue that 12% fuel saving adds up to £1k over 40k miles.

The BMW is also the nicer looking of the two cars I have to say and from the pictures has a much more aluring cabin and styling. Autocar did take one of the F10's out and said it wasnt as "inherintly sporting" as previous fives.

I prefer my 211 to a 212 and if changing for another MB saloon, I'd have a 204.

Sadly, I think I would have to go with the Beemer too. The new E-class doesn't look right.

Maybe it'll grow on you as time goes by and they are more common place, but at the moment... (You can insert a "chuck up" smiley here)

I've been living with a 212 for a few days Steve and you're right - stick with the 211. Without dissing other peoples choices, I am appalled by the 212.

The BMW may be a better car in some areas, but I'd have the Mercedes, because of the image. Dropping someone off at the Dorchester looks better in a Merc than a BMW.

IMHO, the BMW interior looks more classy, and less likely to date.

It's becoming CVT by another name.

Think its a ZF torque converter job.

Why 8 speeds?

Numbers sell, its one more than the MB 7spd box and the same as lexus use in the luxury cars. 6spds IMHO is ample but now with diesel engines making up the majority of sales-narrow torque bands are all the rage so I guess more gears keeps the car on the boil.

However, it will be a very complex box, and due to the number of ratios in it, the cogs will be "thinner" so more likely to break. Great for the 1st 5 years, then not so good.

who cares , as long as it lasts the first 3 years thats somebody elses issue :)

Go a bit further up the range and you will find the mercedes gets cheaper significantly.

Look at the E350cdi Avantgarde vs 530d SE.

Mercedes have traditionally enjoyed strong residual values, due to their saleabilty and demand on the second hand market.

It'll be the original buyer's problem if the cars start to get a bad rep and the residual values suffer as a result ;)

Cars that are overcomplicated or too expensive to run seem to drop value quicker it seems.
