Hi Guys I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas:bannana:
I have a question the sat nav on my 2001 320CDI now takes 35mins to recognise the disc.
I get messages such as

!CD reading error.
please use another
navigation CD.
or !CD not available
please insert NAVI-CD
type DX

The sat nav disc is the one that came with the car and has worked fine for years. now it takes 35 mins for the system to recognise the disc. once it has the sat nav works fine. :dk:

Seems to be a whole raft of these failing at the same time. Must be a business opportunity here somewhere if someone can work out a simple enough repair.

MB probably have and are coining it in as we speak

Longshot but have you tried putting a cd/dvd lens cleaning disc in?

I get this in my clk once the weather turns cold / damp .

I'm convinced it is either the lens or the disc getting steamed up. Once everything is powered up , the cold disc gets warm and mists over.

Mine sometimes works straight away if I pop the disc out and give it a wipe with a soft cloth

Ive tried that as well. but I take on board what you are saying.

Well I was just about to bite the bullet on a new DVD unit but was undecided on getting a used one off eBay for £200-300 or get a new one for 5 times that but have a decent warranty. Mine just stopped working suddenly and I tried several times with a DVD cleaner but no joy, decided I had nothing to lose so decided to strip it down to get access to the lens itself.
Getting the unit out is simple (I removed the fuse to DVD unit and the Comand head unit just to make sure there were no MOST errors after) there are just two clips one on each side, a stereo removing key is ideal but as you have fairly easy access I managed to just push them in by hand.
The unit slides out although it does need a little persuading. Once out there are three connectors at the rear that need to be unplugged.

There are no screws holding the unit together the top needs to be prised off with a small precision flat head screwdriver. I then removed the main cage with a precision screwdriver torx (4 bolts), there are 3 ribbon connectors that need to be pulled but they are the simple they have a tab at each end which secures the ribbon in place.
Then I removed the circuit board again held in pace with torx bolts (4 or 5 total) additional ribbons need to be removed.

This is where it gets tricky to get to the lens you need to remove it from the parallel bars it slides on, I worked out that the right bar has a torx secured tab holding it in place and then the bar can be slid out allowing the lens unit to be removed.

I then cleaned the lens with my camera lens cleaning fluid and brush and reassembled. Getting the parallel bars back in was the difficult part but finally worked out that with needle pliers and a 2mm flat head screwdriver used to pry up the base the bar finally went back in place.

Put the unit back in turned on and hey presto worked straight away, lets hope it lasts. All in it took about 45 mins total.

I've had this on music CD players also. A clean works wonders.

I had a service on my C220 today and told them about this problem (mine just stopped about 3 months ago) and was told I needed a new DVD which is £400. I'd rather buy a tom tom or something than pay that. It really annoys me as I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the disc :(

i had this issue with mine so i took the disc to my local computer shop ( GAME or GAMESTATION ) and they will give your disc a ultra sonic clean to remove contaminents and slight scratches . worked a treat

It can be the disc but most likely it's the DVD unit the lens gets dirty and so cannot read the disk. You can try a DVD cleaner disk, I got one from Maplins but it did not make any difference. In the end I stripped the SAT NAV DVD unit down to clean the lens itself. Mine has been working since but I will see how it goes.
