Sat Nav updates, This seems cheap?

I doubt very much if they're genuine parts.

Seems too cheap and if you read the terms then it suggests these are to be used as 'backup' media to software you already own for those users who lack the know-how to backup their DVDs themselves.

So, certainly a dark grey area, but I have no doubt that you will receive something that works just like the original.

Not used them, just giving an opinion.

Car Mechanics Magazine used to regularly recommend a certain website for the purchase of on-disc repair manuals.

I followed their advice and ordered on-line a couple of these manuals, which were very reasonably priced at a round a tenner each.

What I received in the post - oddly sent from Spain - was two home-burnt CDs which contained fully working copies of the manufacturer's EPC and TIS (which is the same as MB WIS).

There was also a printed piece of paper saying that the CD is provided without any license and can only be used as an archive backup.

Needless to say that none of this was mentioned on the website where I placed the orders.

I definitely did not expect that. This was a clear case of software piracy if I ever saw one. Yet CM continued to refer readers to this website for many more months. Strange.

I just checked, the site is still alive and kicking, selling the same on-disc manuals that I bought 4 years a go... and still no mentioning that it is an illegal copy.

seems they're treating the Updates as genuine, as their Disclaimer states:

Well, I would bet large amounts of money that they don't have permission to use the various manufacturers logos, for a start, and MB and BMW are pretty hot on that (as several indie's have found).

I've no idea if it's legal or illegal to sell copies of software as they are.

No, it isn't legal, straightforward software piracy. Amusingly all the hookey stuff is available on torrent sites for free (which is where the ebay sites get it from.

Certainly needs treating with the utmost care, you really don't know exactly what you are buying/downloading, and what it could do to your car.

He he, that's a real give-away.... when did you last see an honest seller say this?

so the conclusion is to go to the Original Source for updates, other than that, they're all pirated copies! ;)

Get the original (and legal) MB items here:

Comand Online Ltd

Obviously the pricing is nothing to do with ComandOnLine, but the update prices that Mercedes charge are insane. I'm sure many more people would upgrade, or even buy annual subscriptions, if it was a more reasonable amount.
