Im a bit perplexed with the SBC Hold function on my W211 E270. When the car is stopped either uphill or downhill by simply pressing the brake pedal firmly the SBC Hold function should engage?

The problem seems to be sometimes it will work and other times no matter how hard u depress the brake pedal it wont engage. By not engaging i mean the icon on the display doesnt light up. Could this be a fault that needs sorting before the warranty runs out? Chances are the car will be going in for a service before the warranty expires so can get it looked at then but just thought i would get some opinions as i am relatively new to Mercedes.

Depress the Brake Twice

HOLD
  • when pulling away, especially on steep slopes
  • when manoeuvring on steep slopes
  • when waiting in traffic
The vehicle is kept stationary without the driver having to depress the brake pedal.
The braking effect is cancelled and HOLD deactivated when you depress the accelerator pedal to pull away.
Activation conditions
  • the vehicle is stationary
  • the engine is running
  • the driver's door is closed
  • the parking brake is not applied
  • the bonnet is closed
  • on vehicles with automatic transmission*, the selector lever is in position D, R or N
Activating HOLD

Make sure that the activation conditions are met.

Depress the brake.

Depress the brake again quickly until HOLD appears in the display.

HOLD is activated. You can release the brake pedal.

If depressing the brake pedal the first time does not activate HOLD, wait briefly and then try again.

Is this a feature or standard on all W211?

Standard on all 211, SBC hold and SBS stop on all SBC equipped models (pre facelift, makes farting noise at random). Brake hold on post facelift models.

Come to a stop, then press brake pedal hard and "SBC H" should appear, hold is released when you hit the throttle in drive or reverse. New ones show "Hold".

SBC stop automatically brakes in traffic, activate by trying to activate cruise below about 5mph.

I guess post #2 is invisible..... :(

:D :D Join the club,
SBC Stop might have been removed before the face-lift. :)

Your post 2 was excellent but the bit on activating and bringing it out to use it was not there,as the OP already had it it up in the menu and my answer was for Gallom who has a 211 and has not gone in to his consumer menu to activate the feature

My SBS hold is tempramental but I put it down to operator error. The bit about 'depress brake and depress again' is misleading cos it seems to suggest that the pedal is released between 'presses'. I find that keeping the pedal depressed and once the car is stopped (that is: completely stationary) another slightly harder push will activate the 'hold'.

Just adding that these features did not come out till around the middle of 03

My 52 plate SL didnt have it, my 04 plate does Given system is same on SL and E - I suspect that Television is spot on.

Given you are talking about a specific model, then I don't doubt the accuracy of the reply but we are talking about a function on the E-class, namely SBC and I still maintain that this was available on the first E-class 211's which were produced before the date both yourself and Television are talking about.

John

The first 230 that came in to the UK in Feb 2002 though the first cars were out in 07 2001 and did not have it as it was not thought of at that time. It was added mid 2003 around 07 2003.

So as it was not thought of, the same applies to the 211 that shares the identical braking system to the 230 and 215 this is also the same time that the cars went over to a MOST bus

Seems like waffle to me;)

We are talking about the 211

We are talking E-class and I'm sure the E-class 211 began life with SBC. Forget the SL, we are talking E-class and it never had standard brakes.

Nowhere have I said that the 211 ever had anything other than SBC.

I could not care less about what you think I am talking about, for I am talking about SBC this is grouped into the cars that have SBC that is namely the 211,215 and 230. If SBC STOP & HOLD was not thought of or introduced until 2003 then haw can you have it on the cars before this date.

There are 2 SBC pumps made one for non STOP & HOLD and the later one with it, the pumps are not interchangeable

The modified SBC pump was fitted to the 211 after the 01 03 03

The term for this is and MB's words not mine are the following

211 with code 423a 5 speed automatic transmission (new generation) with SBC STOP & HOLD function.

And thats me out of the thread

Its in the consumers menu where you can activate it

Thanks all - does not seem to work and I can't find a "consumer" menu. As my W211 is a 220CDi (June 06 AvantGarde, pre facelift) is it possible that the menu is not available without STAR?

;)SBC is a standard feature of all the E-class 211's. If your car is pre facelift then it will will only have SBC Hold and NOT SBC Stop. At first my wife had an extremely hard time using this feature and there is a knack. To my knowledge it does not need any type of activation, just practice. I have no experience of the very latest facelift models which no longer use the same system.

Is there any E-class owners that live near you that you can compare notes with?

I'm not aware of problems with SBC recently - it's still fitted to the biggest, and the fastest, of MB cars, the Maybach and the SLR, where money is no object.

It's a significantly expensive system, and a hydraulic brake system as fitted post facelift will be saving a lot of money, which is multiplied by a lot of cars on a mainstream product like the E class.
