SCN Coding

I wonder what provision there will be for access to Car software once Brexit happens?

THX. Yes, I see now.
In the meantime I found some prints of the Xentry diag. It says the current "MB object number of hardware: 2229014201". Does it map to many different things ? Such as the A2189007206 perhaps? As well to sg as A212..... or A207.....

As for coding is it not an option to copy the config from the old (or the working right one) to the dismantled one with Star diag? Or to connect it to the car before attaching the lamp unit itself?

On the other hand, the problem is quite minor now: the left DRL (position light) has gone but all the rest is working nicely. Also, the Xentry found everything OK. So I am hesitant to have the front of the car taken apart and find if it is a fault of a LED bulb (with the entire unit is to change, but no programming I guess) or this control unit is to be replaced, or maybe both....

As long as the UK keeps the law saying the motor manufacturer must provide tools/access, then I doubt anything will happen.

There are Hardware versions, Software versions and the Part number. All same format but different things. The part number will change when h/w or s/w changes.

No copying of options, doesn't work that way (it used to for configuration parameters, and still does where data such as service history is copied) - SCN coding is used to always put the correct (based on the datacard) config into a module, and with the lights (and some other things) you put in a code that is on whatever is being controlled by it.

Swop the two controllers over and see if it moves ? I suspect more likely to be the light then the control unit .. Before doing that I'd check if the code on the top of headlight is same (its "etched" into the plastic rather than on a label) on both sides. Post a photo and I'll show you which it is

Thick end of what? Circa £900 to change a component that costs perhaps £15 to manufacture?

If this is true, what level of insanity have we reached when minor repairs are getting close to writing off an otherwise serviceable old car.

This is part of a larger issues. Ridiculously high labour costs and 20% VAT on top of both parts and labour mean that otherwise roadworthy cars with low mileage get scrapped (be it due to a minor collision or a relatively minor mechanical fault).

In other places around the world these cars would get fixed and put back on the road. If you look at the average age of cars in the South of Italy or the South if Spain etc (not to mention outside of Europe), you will find that cars last much much longer over there.

In the olden days I would fix a blown head gasket myself. £100 worth of gaskets, seals, coolant and oil, and 4 hours of my time. But these days most older cars will get scrapped due to a blown head gasket. Which is a waste, and definitely not environmentally friendly.

Also, as a side effect of the 2008 crash, we've had cheap finance deals which saw sale of new cars increase by nearly 40% between 2011 and 2016.

This may have had some benefits by way of giving the appearance of a rise in the standard of living (the feel good factor), and by invigorating the econony as more new cars were being built and sold.

But it also resulted is an over-supply of second-hand cars, and a rapid decline in value, meaning that old cars now get scrapped sooner as even a minor repair bill will likely exceed the value of the car.

THX for the answer. I am getting to understand now.
So the part is to be programmed to the car using the central datacard data. Right?

So the 200 GBP questions is:

Will it work with a used part?

(It may come from a car very similar to this, having similar or same headlamp unit. Even so it has been programmed already...)

LED Controller: If it comes from a car with the same light (this same code that is on the light !!) then it will work. If it does not, then it may damage the light or not light the correct LEDs. It can not be re-configured once it has been configured. The reason is clear, if you put in one that is configured wrongly it can blow up the light. So you always put a brand new one in that will light nothing until it is correctly configured.

My advice; A new headlamp is very expensive.
