Discussing the state of my bumper trims earlier today (exciting stuff) and looking at parking threads on here, this seems pertinent..

Why do many modern cars dispense with the useful black plastic bits which prevent the inevitable light contact turning into a job for a paintshop.. My CE is well equipped for avoiding the odd car park ding or turning circle poor judgement being part clad in plastic with matt black bits at either end, but looking at many (Porsche, BMW etc.) there seems to be nought but metal on the doors and pretty much everything seems to have painted 'bumpers'

Because they look fugly! Cars look a lot cleaner without black plastic bit all over the place IMO :D

One better than that - anyone remember the 'sprung' bumpers that you used to see on old Volvos etc :D

They really did look apt for 'parking by touch'

I guess one argument for many cars of today and most in the near future would be parking sensors? The primary reason though must surely be down to aesthetics.
