Bought this screw yesterday from my local dealer. I'd love feedback on what you think it should cost, and what you think it did cost.

It probably cost £2 or £3, but in reality it's not a specialist part and you could have got one from anywhere really.

Just has some red thread lock pre-applied, so perhaps it isn't a commonly bought screw or something :o

Sometimes bits like this can surprise you though, 12p or whatever :)

Well ---if one was being picky--- its high quality plated screw with a captive washer complete with a thread locking compound[red] so slightly better than bog standard. It probably cost more to raise the invoice than anything else.---wonder if there is a parts minimum order price or putting it another way-- what's the least sum of money anyone's been charged for an official invoiced MB part on its own? [ part of a bigger multi-part order doesn't count]

ps quite few MB screws are very fine pitched metric threads which can be tricky to source.

Personally, I would probably use sticky fixers for the number plate :)

There you go Mike. 50 for £12 and they're 304 stainless. :wallbash:

It's great when you know how!

The fact is, I shouldn't be let near spanners and the likes - most tools, really. I sometimes like to walk on the wild side though, and risk doing things with screw drivers and up to three screws, perhaps five max.

I tried a three screw job yesterday, and not only did I manage to lose one of them on re-assembly, I also managed to break the part they were hidden behind!:o I knew the screw wouldn't be MB specific, but didn't know the size, so as I wanted something else, I took the car for a drive to the dealer's, also to help dry it after a wash, before putting it back in the garage for the week.

I'll reveal at the end of the day, but despite its spec (too small for number plates?) and they had it in stock, I think it's a bit steep.

89 pence for a rear washer bottle grommet.

oooh the special red screw... £7.25 my guess

when you asked for it - did the MB parts counter guy breath in, put his hand on his chin and make a "aaaaaah" sound like a plumber coming to fix a boiler ?

:O)

Another factor to take into account is that when you go into the MB dealership to ask for a "little screw thingy with a funny star shaped socket at the end for my car" quite a bit of information retrieval then takes place. Usually via the chassis number and consulting the latest EPC and a bit of conversation between customer and parts desk-some head scratching and maybe even an informal "site visit" to the car in question in the dealer car park. After this -which does cost time and money- if you're lucky they will have one in stock- if not they will order it in for you and you will usually get it in a couple of days.-- and if the partsman knows his job ---it will fit!
Now you could try quoting your chassis number at your friendly local engineering wholesaler or at the whimsically entitled " help desk" at Band Q but I would not recommend it.
