....how does one get it and how does it differ from a CRB check?

In my search for employment, I've seen adverts for positions that require security clearance, which I don't have. Is this somethnig that can be attained off your own bat or do you need to be taken on by a company that is willing to sort it out if the position requires it?

TIA, David

I think its something that is done via company sponsorship, I got mine through my previous emplyer. Which clearance level are you talking about? SC+?

It really annoys me that a lot of jobs I've seen avertised have required security clearance but have refused to have it carried out for you. SC only lasts for a year or two depending on the type so how is a contractor supposed to get the clearance if no-one is willing to offer it?

Yeah it was a big enough PITA getting it when i had my employer organising it, must be a nightmare getting it by yourself!

You can bet my rate will go through the roof if I ever get clearance! ;)

Does this help ?
Hays
Seems as though the employer will put you through the procedure if they think you are worth it.

SC cleared and approved for Met Police too :D (met police want to know EVERYTHING!)

I have SC and also Level 4 clearance for the airports.
Means I can drive right up to the planes.
Only done that once at Manston though.

Thats who I needed to get cleared for! Took FOREVER!

Crb

Myself and my wife have been CRB checked through Chernobyl Children's Life Line ... and before that when I worked with children on a professional bases... I think the checking is standard if you intend to work directly with children or people at risk .. They should check evan if you work in a voluntary nature, if the body your volunteering for is sensible about the protection of it's children......as for SC this is required for my job .... and they check me once a year......because of the work i do and the places i visit...

oh - i thought you just had to be an immigrant baggage handler to do that...

I was PV'd whilst in the Army before taking up a post at S.H.A.P.E. in Belgium. Took 6 months and if they could they would have dug up my ancestors and questioned them.

In my last job I was security checked by the Home Office.

It was because I had work related to the transport of the Royals. ;)

Sounds like I can't get clearance on my own, then. :(

Oh well, reckon I can handle street-sweeping or shelf-stacking........ (no offence!)

I'm DV !!

I thought clearance was based on the type of work and so had to happen on a per job basis, even if already done......although this may only be the case up to SC.

Have a look though this and also this

I thought SC lasted for about 15 years - I recently went for a job with the Home Office and they were happy that I was SC cleared about 5 years ago.

I think it does last longer than a year, but you need to be checked out periodically just to make sure that your situation hasn't changed.

SC/DV etc is effectively a closed shop club  it takes so bloody long to get it most of the time you cant be concidered for the work...

If you really want to get it The best way is to go and work for a shit company like Logica and they will they will clear a certain amount of people based on the up coming requirments...

But if you are in IT its the kiss of death, as you only ever end up working on 5 year old operating systems and kit that everyone else has thrown out years ago :D I can still remember ICL skip hunting for DRS6000s to sell to the MOD because they were the only approved server at the time

VFM my ****!

Hit the nail on the head, I was with my last employer for 5 years of which 4 were spent with a client that required SC clearance. Infact my SC was the reason I handed in my resignation, theres only so long you can configure Nokia Firewalls and outdated PKI systems before you start to go a little crazy!

LOL :D The bit that made me spit my dummy out, was spending hours working on bids and propositions for ar$eholes that couldn't read, let alone understand them :( and then being dragged in to meetings to be told that we won the work, but that the requirements were totaly different to what we went in to do  Its no wonder the private sector screw every penny out of them on change control
