Selling A Car on Ebay

I plan on selling one of my cars soon and despite warnings about the flocks of idiots and timewasters that will inevitably appear I still plan on trying Ebay.

I put together a draft buy-it-now listing with about 8 photographs which it seems will cost a very reasonable £15. Is that it or will Ebay charge me more when it actually sells ?

And are Gumtree and Pistonheads worth a try ?

I think £15 is the total final price when you sell a car but I might be wrong.

Depending on the car but I would never discard auto trader. I have never failed to sell a car there in a reasonable time. Last time, it sold on a day without any fuss. I did gumtree but I only got an scammer in return and nothing on eBay as it sold so quickly on auto trader.

Depends on the value of the car.
Higher value cars seem to sell well on pistonheads and auto trader. Cheaper motors sell well on eBay and Gumtree in my experience.

If someone presses the Buy-It-Now button there will be an extra charge on top of the original listing cost but it's very rare for anyone to do it with a car listing.

I wouldn't say eBay is any different with messers to any other site except the sheer amount of traffic it gets. In my experience all I ever got from Piston Heads was spam and attempted scams, it's very slow. AT or eBay are my two preferences.

What car are you selling?

Don't Paypal take a cut as well?

Yes they do,

Best thing to do i think would be list saying £250 deposit via paypal within 24Hrs after auction ends and then remaining balance when car collected

(only my idea)

As an admitted car addict I have sold many cars on eBay with good results, even making some lifelong friends through the process. I used to use auto trader and for a while i listed cars on both and found they always sold form the eBay advert. It is very true it depends on what you are selling but you'll get a bigger audience on eBay. My best advise is to run it as a classified ad with a 'best offer' option but again it depends on what you are selling and how quickly you want a deal. You will likely get a lot of weird questions from dreamers, 'Will you take an F reg Ford in part exchange' or 'Can you arrange finance' but I've had more time wasters over the years from auto trader come and view than from eBay. As another member mentioned, if it's a cool and expensive car your selling Piston Heads is quite good as well... What are you selling? If it's a merc try our classified, the nice this about selling to a fellow enthusiast and member is less messing about... Good luck!

Top tip - get a free SIM card and a cheap (or use an old phone) and advertise with that number.

I'll probably just stick to selling the car !

Sold a few cars via eBay and piston heads. Found Gumtree a waste of time. The worst was Auto Trader, with lots of scam calls and little interest.

My easiest sale was my M5, on piston heads 24 hours. Guy came next day and deal was done. But agree piston heads is better for your more enthusiast type cars.

Good luck with what you decide.

Sold JSWMBO Punto on Gumtree in 8 hours Sold SWMBO A8 on Ebay in 15 hours. All I have had from AT and PH are scammers.

Payment will be by cash on collection - ideally paid into my bank account by the buyer and never actually handled by me.

Dangerous it can be taken out after the event as easy as its put in, depends on value of car but good old fashioned cash always works

Ebay Classifieds is different to Buy-it-Now. 1 Ebay fee and no additional Paypal fees. I recommend using this.

Yes EBAY classifieds, 15 quid, you can create a decent advert, which you can't on Autotrader.

My CLK went in 3 days, no issues.

I'd really like to go to the bank with the buyer and have them pay the cash into my account using my card.

Bank transfers cannot be reversed & cannot be taken out after the event ;) as I have been told numerous times when buying cars but he bank.
