Selling an AMG

I'm in the same boat mate but just can't decide what the best thing to do is.... I think I may just keep it :D

I really don't understand the car market. £80k when new. Been excellently maintained and repaired when it's gone wrong now it's struggling to sell at £13k. However take an RS4 same year same miles, cost £50k new still demand £16/£17k. Having owned both the CLS is in a different league. That said we do live in a world were people pay £300 for a bloody plastic fiver!

You both having cracking examples and you don't realise how good they really are until they have gone. I miss mine terribly and whilst I will eventually replace it with a 5.5 biturbo, it will have to be remapped to take it to another performance level, but I doubt I will get it to match in the looks or noise department.....could be an expensive risk!

There will be a buyer for both cars but you just have to sit tight and wait. This Forum is a good place to find a buyer as enthusiasts get the opportunity to buy from a fellow member and find out a lot more about the car than you would buying from AT or EBay. In the last 4 months there have been at least 2 really keen potential buyers for both the E and CLS55, so had either of your cars been available then at your current asking prices (or close) then you might have sold.

Autotrader has 5 cars with 55-65k miles for similar money.

I had a CLS55 for 6 years and 50k miles .. best car I ever had.

Miss it very much. Still think I should have kept it. I think it will be a classic in future ..

Be sure you really want rid before you sell.

I'm in no rush as I agree it ticks all the boxes. And yes it certainly will be a future classic. I'm just crunching more motorway miles with work so need an oil burner for now. Save my pennies for a C63! But que sera sera

To be fair a escort cosworth is like 30k now. There is no sense in the car market.

Considering all the above and with some further research I've revised the asking price.

Personally I'd be holding off until April/May before advertising. Its a bad time of year for selling a car that will appeal to a smallish specialist market. Its not going to depreciate much more in that time IMHO.

I see Dazzler is not attracting bids on his E55 either.

As a wise man said it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I was prepared to pay £14500!! I obviously had my pants pulled down. Oh well. I may just eBay auction it and let it find its own price.

Be fair to yourself, I believe you bought it from a dealer which would make it more expensive anyway and didn't they pay to fix your initial problems.

As a private sale I doubt you'd be prepared to cough up if it blew up on the way home whereas a dealer has to so it may still be worth £14.5k from a dealer with that safety net but not from your driveway.

Look at it another way, you'll take a hit on that oil burner too when you get shot and it will potentially cost you more in real terms than the extra cost in fuel...won't be as much fun either :thumb:

Yes that's true he did pick up the £2300 repair bill. Gives the new owner some peace of mind that this work has recently been done.

It may not sell even at that price, though. There are buyers out there who would pay more, no doubt, but they're not buying at the moment. If the OP can't afford to wait, it's only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it now.

Wow what cost 2300?
Surprisingly little, possibly; I spent nearly that on my second E55K just after I bought it, and there was nothing major done.

A load of work
Dynamic Seat pump was over £500. Vacuum tank and fitting £300. Oil cooler pipe had to be fabricated as they are rare as hen's teeth. Rocker cover reseal, breathers cleaned, all poly belts replaced... It was in the workshop over 2 weeks. But it's been running perfectly ever since..

Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to keep the car until next spring & buy a small oldish diesel van/car to tide you over for the m/way runs ?

Thing is with these types of car they can be quite an impulsive buy so it's easy to ask a grand or two more than you'd really want but it's worth a punt.

Yours looks a nice example, think nearer the £11-12k mark should ramp up interest.

People stop buying cars in the Winter months. Dark nights, rain and cold weather stop people from travelling the country - there's better stuff to be done. Come Easter, everything bursts into life again.

But even then, you're pricing that at the same level as cars with nearly half the mileage. You've got a great looking car there but, faced with two cars, most will go low mileage for fear of what's round the corner. The Seller knows it's a great car - but the Buyer doesn't know, and has to take a risk.

Best advice - as you're not in a hurry, wait until Easter. But watch the Autotrader to see what actually sells - not the prices asked - and work out what you can realistically get for it.

That is generally true but just to buck the trend I have decided to start looking for an SL55 as I think I will get better value at the time of the year. As long as I can find the right car.
