Selling at a car auction

No...but i have bought from auction about three times. The British Car Auctions are recommended and have a good web site. I went to the ex fleet sales at british car auctions auctions about five months ago ( ex fleet sale cars have full history and some have manufacturers warranty ) to purchase a bmw diesel and they were selling for top money, (some selling for the same as private adverts)...same for the mondeo diesel...didnt see any mercs though....probably because there are not many ex fleet mercs ??. I think putting your car through auction is an excellent idea. If you trade your car in the dealer will give you bottom book price and then usually no discount on the car you are buying. If you sell your car through auction , depending on who is bidding , you will probably get far more than bottom book price..especially if two private buyers get into a bidding war which can be quite common !! You will then be a cash buyer and get discount on your new purchase. Dont forget though when selling through auction there is a fee to pay to the auction house. To get an idea of comparisons get a trade in price from the dealer for your car then ring up the British Car Auctions and ask them what price they think you would get...good luck :)

I've been to a couple of British Car Auctions, but only as a spectator. I think they had (have?) special auctions for "prestige" vehicles, so this is probably where the Mercs are classified.

good advice by petef.

However i have not seen that many bargains at auction for a long time. More and more of us private buyers are going now and pushing up the prices. To be honest, I have found better deals just on ebay or autotrader for buying, and for selling, ebay is probably the best place of you can weed through the timewasters generated!

Thanks

Jay

I have owned two ex-fleet MBs :)

My previous car was bought from the fleet company directly (listed it themselves on Autotrader!), my current car was bought from a used car dealer that had bought the car directly from Lex.

Both cars had full service history and although unloved they wanted for nothing in servicing or tyres or repairs etc due to being fully-financed.

I can say ive never taken a car to an auction but a friend of mine had bought a couple from there and I must say he got them at a bargin price and in near perfect condition!

Jays right there are few bargains to be had at auction these days and thats due to private buyers attending auctions...and thats good news if ya sellin a car through the auction. Private punters can so easily get caught up in the excitement and adrenalin rush of the bidding game thinking they are getting a bargain ...you have to actually experience bidding for a car to understand this feeling.... !!! :)
