Service E Pricing

The local Mercedes dealership have just quoted £450 for a service E on the folks 56 plate E220 CDI 44,000 miles. The price of £450 includes a 20% discount.

Also, the transmission fluid & brake fluid wouldn't be changed as they were done back in May when the car was bought. Essentially it's oil and filters plus the various inspections they carry out.

The lady on the service reception did say its one of the biggest services but considering 2 of the costly items aren't required does it seem rather expensive?

What are your thoughts?

5 year old car, get it done elsewhere.

I bought 8 litres of oil from Engine Oil, Motor Oil, Gear Oil, Car Oil, Motorbike Oil from oilman at Opie Oils for £50, filter was £8, and the air and cabin filters were around £30 from memory.
I used a local garage that I know well and trust and they charged me £60 labour.

So around £150.

I am not saying don't go with Mercedes, but think it depends how long you are planning on keeping it for?
If you are about to sell the FMBSH may be worth the extra £300, if you are keeping it for a couple of years go indy, by 7 years old it will never be going back into the Mercedes dealer network and just don't think FMBSH is going to be an issue at all.

I've been using main dealers for the last 2 years.....no more though, going to start using a good indy, Alex Crow is nearish to me, so we'll have a day out in Stowmarket while the car gets serviced. And save a few bob as well.

In my opinion it's only worth using a main dealer during the warranty period, after that, indy all the way!

<Maybe it would also depend upon how much value is placed on Mobilio?

Maybe, but with full RAC cover etc, is it really that worthwhile?

I have to admit that is why I kept using Mercedes up to 90k miles, however when I thought about it more I did wonder if I actually wanted my car to go to Mercedes if it broke down for any repairs. The answer to that was 'No!'.
So I joined back up with the AA for the first time in over 15 years, think it was £35 for the year, and now it will get taken to where I want it to go.

I have to disagree.......

If I hadn't used main dealer for servicing MB wouldn't have entertained their contribution to my crankshaft bearing at 90k miles.....
I agree about using an Indie for brakes, transmission fluid etc. But basic servicing at the MB dealer gives you Mobilio and future goodwill (perhaps).

All IMHO of course.

My car is coming up to 4 years old and I had always had full RAC cover. However this year I am relying on Mobilio alone. Some reports of poor Mobilio service have worried me and if I find that when I need it, it is poor, then with my car getting over 4 years old I will probably revert to RAC and maybe an indie for servicing. Never have really got a straight answer as to whether Mobilio will carry out some of the minor repairs that the RAC would.

My experience of Mobilio is that a MB trained mechanic will turn up with Star machine and diagnose problem. My call outs were all auto shut off motors and all had to be fixed by a MB dealer.
Once was in France and we were recovered by a local contractor who dropped us off at a hotel en route to MB dealer. Constant calls FROM mobilio informing us of what is happening - then a taxi to take us to dealer to collect car. From my experience I would score Mobilio as 10 out of 10...Others may disagree from their own experiences but one has to call it as one finds it.

Regardless of the letter(ie a,b,c,d,e,f)showing on assyst/assyst+ services still alternate annually between A&B on cars built 2006 on afaik so for the lady on service reception to tell you your due service is one of the biggest bearing in mind you've had tranmission/brake fluid changed recently is misleading to say the least.Look at various mb dealer offers on servicing for cars over 5 years old(Tony Purslow offer 40% labour/20% stocked parts as far as i can remember).

Well, they managed to get another £50 knocked off today at a different dealer. At the moment the car still has 7 months warranty remaining, but I have a sneaky feeling it will be going into the care of an Indy once it's up.

The feedback back to the cars service from today is a big thumbs up for Mercedes of Cold Stream. Dad is really happy with their attitude, couldn't be more helpful and all in all a very stress free day.

Current Euro law means that you can have your car serviced where you like - even in the warranty period and it will not be invalidated.

The only stipulations are that you must use parts of equivalent or better standard (not necessarily OEM although I would probably only use OEM anyway) and the schedules must be stuck to.

However, I would agree with the point that good will is a two way street and if you don't use a main dealer, you cannot expect good will.
