Shell Helix vs Mobil 1

Just to say... for a number of years I was member on another car forum... the forum rules were that any 'oil thread' gains it's starter an automatic ban! Apparently over the years there have been a number of such 'oil threads', involving heated and emotional debates and going on endlessly. I guess these is one of this areas that car owners are passionate about but with no hard scientific evidence either way this kind of discussion can go on forever...

Discussion is good...

Interesting thread this, I must admit to running Mobil 1, as advised by my mate who is a Mercedes Indy.

Having read the B*W thread, the Yanks seem very keen on oil analysis, is this something that we can get done in the U.K? If so anybody know where?

This is a FORUM not a DICTATORSHIP, Forum = Discussion, If anyone starts imposing stupid rules like that then I'm outta here, Some of us work in the Industry and actually like to hear others views, Just because I have one opinion and someonelse has another doesn't mean it's going nowhere. I'm open to change and I'm also open to sharing my knowledge and experience with other members on this forum, that's why I'm not a member of the ones that Impose stupid rules :D

Wow, haven't seen this for ages.

Car is still a tad gruffer, it just seemed better on Shell Helix. I'll get it serviced soon, again, and will ask for Helix 5w-30 229.5 to be used as I feel it made my car run better.

I remember the mobil 1 thread, and note the issues raised.

Don't go by what MB say is OM quality, valeo rads anyone???

It would seem that we are now discussing the right to discus... :D

Isn't that the point of a forum, discuss, chat and learn something.

I am glad I am not alone in my views of Mobil 1.

However, I ran my last car on that for 45k miles and it was ok, but was a different engine.

Its more of a heads up for those running V6CDI engines to give them a chance to run it on a, IMHO, superior oil.

Yep, we use THIS place in Worksop you just send them the sample tubes back in the post but the most important thing is to make sure you get a representative sample so the results aren't misleading.

Depending upon what you want to know from the analysis will cost between £25 - £250

Thats why I stand by what I say about Mobil 1 as I have seen the analysis of various oils after various running conditions,

Do you have the time/facilities to just change the oil/filter yourself? Seems a tad over-the-top to get it serviced again! Or is that what you mean?
Would be interested to hear if there is any difference when you change back to Shell....

Sorry, I should have said when it next is in for a service, I'll insist on Shell Helix

My V6 Diesel has always had Mobil 1 in it and todate no problems - but then not having used Shell how can I compare.

I also put it in my lawnmower and that is still going...:thumb::D

We have seen loads of engine failures due to deterioration of components usually plastic with Mobil 1 particularly on Porsches, Evo and Subaru. Have to admit never seen an MB failure though.

What plastic components are involved for Porsches?

Shell Helix is going in my mower, when I finally get round to it. I use Mobil1 in the cars though because that's what the dealer uses.

Just to be clear on one thing: all plastic parts will degrade over time. That is just the way it is

http://www.zeusinc.com/UserFiles/zeusinc/Documents/Zeus_Thermal_Degradation.pdf

So the question is what might either increase the rate of degradation or slow that down? The most obvious one is operating temperature, so you may well see a trend to a higher failure rate over time in high performance cars that are driven hard simply because of the higher operating temperature.

Could certain oils cause that degradation in certain plastic types to be worse than with others? Very possibly: different base stocks, additive packages etc, variable complex high temperature polymer chemistry at work.

So you would think that would be a big issue for oil makers, especially with more and more plastic bits popping up, so some might find this surprising. Or perhaps not.

Q. Will Synthetic Oil Degrade Plastic?

A. "Unfortunately we do not have any specific data with plastic or polycarbonate parts. However the product is packaged in HDPE plastic and is compatible with this type of plastic."

Will Synthetic Motor Oil Degrade Plastic?
