I inadvertently filled with V-power last tank and other than noticing greater smoke output didn't notice any other driving characteristic change.
I've just been and filled up again and noted the tank mileage was a bit low but am staggered to find the V-power has given 5mpg LESS than normal diesel.

Has anyone any experiences of using V-power diesel and seeing any changes?

I use v power diesel all the time in my car, i find it quieter and less smokey, though the only reason i changed over from normal shell diesel was because the fuelsave stuff made my car run like an old pig.......thought the original stuff was better.

Put V-power diesel in my oil burner, I actually got 30 miles less to that tank and noticed absolutely nothing else. Conclusion; useless.

I never use it, when I had my performance cars I always used to buy V-Power (petrol) but when I switched to diesel I never bothered. The car runs absolutely fine on the normal stuff.

When I picked my car up from Birmingham last week I thought I'd put 10 gallon of V Power diesel in just to see if it'd make any difference because I'm very cynical about these things.

So far I seem to be getting more mpg than I would do with 'normal' diesel.

I'll try 10 gallon of the normal stuff next and see what the trip computer comes up with.

It packs a higher cetane rating (the ignition value of diesel) which should - I emphasise 'should' - give a better burn which eventually leads to better fuel efficiency and a few more torques.
The better fuel also cleans too, so the smoke you see will be the cleaning effect of clearing your car's throat.... :)
I'm a cynical journo and haven't seen any advantage when using the odd tank full - £90 a fill-up is bad enough without making it £100 for the same litres.

Anyone daft enough to be a real eberneezer and opt for some of the rebated red diesel (illegal in road vehicles other than tractors), it has a much lower cetane value than standard white diesel and is a heavy oil - it's not even good enough to be called diesel imo.

Believe it or not, you can buy race diesel too.

It was just keen to get away from Birmingham as efficiently as possible :D.

From what I've been told, with the V-Power petrol at least, is that you need to use it regularly in order to see the benefit. Otherwise you end up with a mix of the two in the tank.

Testing that of course could prove an expensive waste of time, I've never rated the V-Power petrol despite the hype. Far prefer the Tesco 99 Ron.

Yes, got similar results to those you found, waste of time. V-Power petrol definitely does make a difference though, if your car is able to take advantage of it.

Its because you filled up with V power and were subjected to the subtle psychological BMW driver effect... this normally leads to less MPG.

V-power has given 5mpg LESS than normal diesel.

~15% is quite a drop. Are you sure this did not coincide with the recent temp drop or a change to your usual driving pattern?

I'm amazed how even one journey to a congested town centre kills my average mpg, even if I do over 500mile to a tank.

"Ferrari fuel for the road".

It must be good then and make my car faster....

what a load of tosh!

I used to drive a Volvo V70xc petrol. It was a completely different car on Vpower petrol. So much so, that I gave up buying any other fuel. Normal petrol made it feel heavy and sluggish.
When I sold it, the new owner immediately took it to Morrisons and filled up. Within 70 miles the lambda sensor played up and put it into limp mode. I have no idea if it was the fuel or pure coincidence but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the fuel.
After the V70 put me off Volvo's for the rest of my life (yes it was that bad), I bought my S210 E300 turbodiesel. I've run it on Vpower since I picked it up with no problems so I don't know if power or mpg are improved by it.
I also run a Toyota Hiace Powervan 2.4 diesel, which is my daily driver and no matter what I put in it, it gives 25 miles to the gallon, be it at 80mph or stop start in town. I'm trying it with two stroke oil in the fuel to see if that cleans the crud out and improves it. It's only halfway through the first tankful, so I have noticed nothing other than quieter running at start up so far.
If it's all good, I'm naturally sceptical, I'll drop the Vpower and start doing the same with the Merc. I'll keep you informed...

FuelSave Diesel
This fuel-efficient formula is designed to ignite and burn more effectively, helping to produce more efficient combustion in your engine. In addition to this, it is also designed to help prevent the build-up of deposits on fuel injectors, improving your engine's efficiency.

V-Power Diesel
Shell V-Power Diesel is designed to remove existing deposits to help restore and maintain performance so that your engine can operate at its best.

The formula not only helps deliver more power, but keeps on delivering that power as you clock up the miles. It is designed to continuously clean modern precision fuel injection systems, helping your diesel car achieve its full performance potential.

FWIW I use FuelSave diesel in the Audi and the Vito, with occasional fills at Sainsburys. The SL only has V-Power Unleaded.

Aside from the cleaning and the low sulphur content, I'm more concerned with the lower lubricity from modern ULSD's, hence the two stroke oil.

Yup. I know V-Power Unleaded has a friction reducer (as well as the cleaning agents), which the diesel obviously doesn't.
