Shock Absorbers???

I have just got in my E Class saloon (2006/64,000 miles) and as soon as I tried to turn left out of the drive I heard the front nearside tyre rubbing against the wheel arch. On closer inspection, there is now no clearance between the two

There was nothing wrong with the car when I last used it a couple of days ago, but I did hear quite a loud bang yesterday evening, which sounded like something hitting the car. I looked out the window but couldn't see anyone or anything.

Could the shock absorber have suddenly failed and that is what is causing the issue? If so, do you replace shock absorbers in pairs? Any estimates on how much this will cost to replace & fit?

Thank you in anticipation of help

Hi,
It sounds like you have snapped a front spring (very very common), buy from MB as it will specced to your specific chassis number and spec approx. £55-60ea.

Thanks guy's, that was quick! Are they replaced in pairs?

Yep - I'd always replace springs in pairs :)

With one broken already that question might answer itself very soon.

You could replace just the one, it is upto you. Their will be a colour code on the spring that you will have to tell the MB parts man.
Very hard to change unless you have the proper spring compressor tool

Easier on a W211.

Easy AND SAFE with the proper tool ; extremely risky without it .

I replaced one on my W202, about 18 months later the other one went.
My local garage charged £35 a side to fit.

Thanks for the info and advise - now to try and get a slot at the garage!
