Not sure why MB in the 1970s used woven cloth on the outerchannels to the doors and rear panel of my W114 250 CE (coupe) . These are the bits that guide the window as it operates up and down and are on the quarter light and door as well as on the rear window frame. They have the water defeating properties of a sponge and allow water into the rear sill area of the coupe and into the door bottoms.

Firstly, I am not sure how to describe the parts I need to replace mine, which are falling apart and the frame metal under the fabric is rusted while the cloth has frayed and is tatty.

Secondly, can I replace these with rubber ones as fitted to modern cars?

Thridly: where can I obtain them, is there a specialist who knows what they are and can fit them or is this something my local garage can do?

Any and all advice would be most appreciated...

Hope you get help with this project, sorry i am not able to give you any info on your car.My car is newish and the seals are rubber and all in one , its just remove it, and replace with new one after glue is applied. But i am sure help will come from another member thats done this job. Good luck.

Hi Colin - I discussed this briefly with John, the technician working on my coupe, and he thought that rubber alone would not work as it needs a lining to prevent it dragging against the windows.

I have had a look at a few suppliers, all seem to offer weatherstrips similar to MB ones.

COH Baines have by far the largest catalogue and lots of available weatherstrips. We might have to join forces for a bit of experimentation!

I hope to look at a W124 coupe soon to see how the rear windows on that are sealed.

Thanks All.
Went on a trip to Woolies in Market Deeping. They had exactly what I needed including a direct replacement for the window seals. It is in rubber with a PVC backing and felt lined. Took me 5 minutes to fit and works perfectly. Even picked up the window channel felted guides.
Part No for the weather strip: = 95a on page 15 of their catalogue=£6 for 1 meter length .Woolies Trim
I am now going to replace all the internal and external weather seals.
Yipppeeee!!!
