Sl R129 interior question

Interesting choice, I've also been looking at these as they are very reasonably priced.

I know nothing about them though.

Any more pics? Interior maybe?

yes, compared to the SL, you get a much younger car for the same price.

pic of the interior I took with the phone when I looked at the car (yes it was raining!) black dash with dark ash wood and oatmeal leather.

if you're buying the caveats are:

pre 2001 models had nikasil cylinder liner problems, check if engine has been replaced. later 2001 4.2litre engine had steel liners.

also, pre 2001 models, the timing chain and tensioners were week points. tensioners made of plastic. later engine had steel ones. It's a £1k job to change them at an independent garage.

and check if gearbox fluid has been changed. It's a sealed for life ZF unit but like the Merc sealed for like 'box, you do actually have to change the fluid.

bodywork wise, look for rust on the back of the rear wings where it joins with the rear panel.

otherwise it's pretty reliable.

fantastice cruiser, very quiet and comfortable but still chuckable for a big car.

What about the back seats, are they bigger or smaller (is that even possible) than on the SL?

I've not even attempted to get into the back seat. It's probably a little bit more space than an SL but you'd have to be a dwarf to fit in.

Apparently a child seat will fit in the back behind the front passenger seat, if it's shunted forward and the backrest tilted forward a bit.

Erm ... it's not a convertible with a hardtop though!

IMHO the drop-top version of the Jag looks awful with the roof down because it doesn't retract (piles up at the rear like an old Golf cabriolet).

But the coupe (like yours) is a smart looking car. Not directly comparable with an SL though.

I know its not a direct comparison, the convertible XK is but the prices are still better value than the SL.

Not going to get into a debate about looks though. :)

I saw a P reg XK convertible on the Strand at lunchtime today ... an immaculate and lovely car, let down by the pram hood folded up at the back! It only looks marginally better with the cover fitted, which for obvious reasons most people don't bother to do.

Sorted on the new-shape one, of course.
