Any ideas why I can't select 2nd on my gearbox? The box works perfectly well in all the other selector positions but it won't allow 2nd to be selected.
I'm a bit concerned this may be linked to the farce of my pre-christmas gearbox oil change...
Cheers
John

No, it drives perfectly well (and selects 1st gear and 2nd gear when in the Drive position) I just can't select it using the manual selection with the stick! Its like there's a detent / mechanism to prevent selection at speed (a bit like the systems used to prevent reverse engagement on a manual)...

Is this a 4 speed or 5 speed box?

I'm pretty sure its a 5 speed (listed as an option (425) on the original invoice at £576.79!!!). The car is a 92...

The 5-speed auto (722.5) was an option on the 300SL, 300SL-24 and 500SL at the time - as was a 5-speed manual on the six-cylinder cars.

The 5-speed auto became standard on the SL320 for the 1994 model year, replacing the 300SL-24.

722.5 has a downshift lockout lever that engages at speed - so you physically can't select a lower gear. If you can't manually shift into second when slowing then this is where you should investigate.

Its not just that I can't select it when slowing, I can't select it when stationary (engine running)! Any ideas what would make the lockout lever jam?

It is activated by control pressure so assuming it worked before the ATF change I can only assume this has changed? There is some adjustment to be had - alternatively the return springs could have failed. Perhaps a question for BlackC55?

Anything to do with the S/C mode switch?

If its a 5 speed then check the 5th gear solenoid (left hand side of the box, by the bell housing). I am led to believe that if the connections come off or are not correctly fitted then it causes shift problems.

If the gearbox shifts to 5th and back then this is unlikely to be the issue, however a fault code can easily be read as they have to be specifically erased, which may help.

I was thinking an adjustment issue, I will have a look in the morning but info on these is limited and much is still on Micro fische

If the gearshift physically can't be moved to 2nd then it has to be related to the locking lever. Not knowing fully how this works I would leave this to Ian or Olly who have no doubt had a few apart! From what I can see the piston is driven by control pressure (adjustable) and works against return springs. If the pressure is too low the lever locks to the lowest setting (2nd)?

Thank you Stats as said if there is anything I will post it up
