I was at our village fete at the weekend and Russ Swift (who I'm sure if you are of an age will know of) who lives in the village always organises a classic car get together; well parked up as a visitor next to the classics was a Mercedes SL300, I've never heard of one; SL350, 400, 500 etc but I've never seen an SL300 before, it was on a private plate so I couldn't tell how old it was, (clearly maybe a year 2000 or newer) and I couldn't find Russ or the owner to ask.

Can anyone point me to where this fits in in the scheme of things I've searched the web with little success.

Cheers

I don't anything about the SL, but a quick web search brought up this ?

So the same 3ltr V6 Engine and its over 100hp down on my 3ltr V6 (SL400) which is only 5 years newer, it must be a revised version of the engine surely?

Any idea when they ran from/to?

300SL maybe? It would be an R107 or an early R129 which ran until 2002.
People can be idiots sometimes and like to badge engineer their cars

No it was an R230, SL300 apparently 2009 to 2011 first time I'd come across one.

The M272 V6 is the one with balance shaft issues and goes back to around 2004.

The R231 SL400 has the M276 ... this is a more modern direct injection engine.

Cheers , Strange that the R231 SL400 with the M276 engine isn't even mentioned there!

That's from the R230 page. This is the equivalent table for the R231:

Cheers Bill,

That explains it.

It does get confusing though when it mentions an SL450 from 2017, which I guess must be the UK SL400 facelift but they called it the SL450 in the states I guess.
