Television, maybe you can advise me on this one, but any help would be useful.

On the rear brakes of my '04 SL there is a stainless steel spring plate that seems to lock the pads in place. There is one each side, and they are beginning to show signs of rust. I want to either take them out and clean them up a bit or replace them so the whole job looks a bit neater. Can you tell me how they are removed and if it's a simple job or not. I've had a pretty good look but they seem to be well and truely fixed.

Thanx

Matt

Thanks Malcolm, I guessed you'd know. I'll have another go at getting them out at the weekend. What I wanted to avoid was dismantling the whole brake assembly and not being able to get it back together.

Cheers

They are the last thing that you put back after changing the pads

Thanks. The whole back end seems to be a bit rusty for it's age. I've not long owned it and I think the previous owner lived in Edinburgh or somewhere near the sea. I will have to do some cleaning up around the rear underneath next spring to try and preserve the car. It's not bad, just needs a bit of TLC and some wax oil or similar.

A Brillo pad works wonders, and most of the iron bits can be painted, though I had not done this one at the time the picture was taken

Disconnect the connector from the SBC controller, or the brakepads can operate when you least expect it and chop your fingers off

You should not get bitten be just removing this plate, you are ok as long as you do not try and remove the pads, and I did not think that you would be

Malcolm, Quite, I'll just be taking out the clips for now, but I'm interested in the race pads you use. Mostly for cutting down the dust rather than racing, but are they as good as they say in the advert and do you think MB would disapprove when it goes in for it's routine service. Matt

It does not affect your service as mine goes through also you are allowed under new rules to fit what you like providing they conform to the original spec, and they do.
I have put up details of how to do it when you are ready
