SL500 wee bit of damage

Me thinks that any 'prospective buyer':) Would very quickly get that information.

What are the engineer's observations about straightening out such damaged metal? Will it be as strong as the original?

Regards
John

John, as I have dismantled many parts of my car and know what on the inside, I cant really see that ever coming back onto the road.
Though you can buy bonnets cheap from converted cars, that will not go far on this one
some examples
Grill £325, rear lamp £200, strut £1k.
The car has a value of £33-36k it would have to have a new shell and sub frame front, complete front suspension and steering gear and many body panels, both bumpers, Rad, Xenon, fogs, ABC pump and 100 times more

A new shell includes all the metal panels :)

I got prices for a new shell for my previous W202 after it was rolled, came to about £5k.

I was asked if I wanted a sunroof at the time as it's the same price (just a big hole in the roof or not! ;) ).

Thanks Shude

I trhink that all the parts would cost around £12k in total, so your investment would stand you in at £19k, if you took too long doing it the resale will be down to £30k

I know the car has a very good spec including Distronic and keyless go and massaging seats.

But all that work, you could earn more driving a double decker bus

I like the fact he has blanked out the registration number. Perhaps he's afraid someone might steal it?

Judging from the damage the driver did not walk away? IF..... the seller is telling the truth (and that is a big IF) then I would take the driver to court and sue them for the full compensation, even if it were paid back at £5 per week.  Looks like the driver's head collided with the windscreen?

John

Looks like someone died in there... so there would be no one to sue

The state of that Steering wheel and the windscreen

You'd put it on a jig, pull it about a bit and replace the front corner and the rear wing.

It's only steel afterall...

Just had an email from the seller and he said the driver ran away from the scene !

I see it says that in the replies now.

I walked (slowly) away from a crash that might have been as severe as that but I was wearing a seatbelt that prevented me from hitting the wheel and windscreen. I can't see how anyone could possibly leave the scene, under their own steam, having caused damage like that with their head and body.

One would probably have to replace the drivers seat too, as the brown stains and the smell may be impossible to totally remove;)

Maybe he has a crash helmet on? Maybe it was the Stig? lol

I doubt a shell would be needed, a good jigman and a wheel house should do the job.

Not a cheap repair though.

For a change of pace you could always use the engine and electronics in a different kind of body. Say ... left hand drive C200 wagon shell.

Now if you take real calculations into consideration the shell costs this much and it comes painted in any colour. The interior and wiring is mostly adequate and things like bumpers and skirts are probably better in AMG style anyhow.

It is worth £60k in Australia.

The amount of stock available from MBENZNL would alarm you. Especially at the prices of some of the R230 parts. Wouldnt buy one screw in the UK, the prices are silly.

UK price on a painted shell is £18,120.94, quite a bit up from the european price.... (£15k in primer)

There are plenty of R230 parts floating around in the UK, no need go to europe.

I meant new parts. Your sellers in the UK just seem to do you no favours at all.

There's no great shortage of those either, but using new parts to repair salvage defeats the object of the exersise.

That said I'll happily sell you a new quarter, new airbag, new lights, new wheelhouse etc for that car for 50% off retail...

Yes Dr Frankenstein. But first would you please explain how the body can be lengthened to allow the door to close.

At that price its out of contention as the other bits plus the donor car would take it to bottom book without labour

the steering wheel + 2 bumpers comes to £1k alone, £2k for the suspension leg, steering column £1k add the rads and grills thats a few more £k

The general idea of salvage is to use second hand parts to keep the cost down....
