I have been slowly fixing a few little niggles on my 2003 C320 saloon and I am now enjoying the car very much.:bannana:

Two things remain that are still unresolved and I am not sure if they are related or not.

When driving slowly in traffic I can hear a light metallic rattle that seems to come from the rear. I have looked at the rear suspension and could find no obvious source.

It seemes to go away with a light application of the brakes but this could just be the fact that the car is moving more slowly and there is not enough energy / momentum to trigger the noise.

The other issue is that my parking brake is still not releasing fully when I pull the release handle. I need to get into the footbrake mechanism to properly lubricate it as spraying silicon into the area under the dashboard seems to help for a day or so.

Could a partly sticking parking brake cause such noises or possibly the brake pads ratttling in the caliper? the retaining spring seems to be correctly fitted. I am having new pads fitted soon so that may rule out one cause!

The other thing that sprang to mind was the rear drop links.............

Many thanks.

Hi
I have a W204 which has the same brake arrangement - I had the same issue with poor operation and sticking of the rear foot brake - the noise would go on light application of foot brake - replaced shoes and put new levers on and hey presto - noise gone and braking is perfect - the shoes and shackles, springs etc come complete in a kit from mercedes - I paid about £60 for it - I hope this helps

Thank you Bernie and welcome to the forum :)

I wonder how difficult it is to remove the rear disc / drum / shoe assembly and refit?

Thank you

The job to replace them was entrusted to my local garage - said it was difficult to get the cables off the old linkages because they were rust and seized - im sure if you are a reasonable DIYer it would be quite easy

Just as aside - i tried replacing the pads as a fist option - noise was still there - the shoes are definitely the culprit

Hi,
I have a 2011 C class W204. I have the same problem. The rear seems to rattle over small bumps in the road, it sounds awful, like the rear is falling apart!. I took it to Mercedes and they said its the rear parking break rotor drum springs that are loose and rattling, no safety issue- thank god. Its gonna be a warranty job for me.
