In what terms do you mean when you ask what the engine is like?
We have a 2011 SLK200 (61 plate) and the engine runs sweetly. It definitely has entertainment value in Sport mode and is just easy to live with in normal modes. The wife leaves the Eco button on but I always turn that off due to personal preference. Can't tell you anything about consumption because we do few miles and fill up when needed without doing any arithmetic. Our has only done 17,000 miles.

Thanks for the reply......not sure if im correct but my understanding is that the pre 2008 models were fitted with mitsubishi engins and a possible problem with timing chains....unsure of the engine fitted to the facelift model in 2008 for improved fuel and performance,,,,and if it has proved reliable and free of any known problems...not really concerned on fuel eficiency, just reliability....
