Under the bonnet there is a cover on the passenger side held in with 3 plastic clips, remove in & look in to the heater motor.
Chances are there is a few leaves in there, they cause a whiting noise.
Some times you will not see them but if you put hand in you will feel them.
Make sure ingnition is off before putting hand in to pull any out.

Ignore that, sorry thought it said 171.

You may have to drop the heater motor down from under the glove box on your model,
If you can check it for leaves.
Also check the dust / combination filter is not clogged

The fan in my work 639 Vito did the same for a few weeks, then died altogether- was a BIG job to replace, entire dash out... but now toasty warm again.

Thanks for the info, is it easy to drop the heater motor

thanks mike
