Anyone drivne one of these, does the engine and exhaust note give a meaty growl or is it pretty tame?

I have not driven one of those before but I would say that AMG cars generally have there exhaust notes toned down and do sound tame.

But you can easily change this with a few mods

I have driven one and thought the exhaust note sounded superb.

It wasn't at all obtrusive, but sounded great under load - even better with the hood down.

My C32 (same engine in a saloon) sounds nice from inside the car, but it's much more subtle.

My father-in-law commented a few times that after we leave his house, he listens as we drive down the lane. Intrigued I asked Mrs D to do a couple of drive-bys and it sounds MUCH better outside the car than it does inside.

Of course you can listen from the outside ANYTIME in an SLK!! ;) :D

I've got the C32 AMG exhaust on my C320 and it sounds awesome :bannana: , in fact I've had many similar comments to Bobby Dazzler, so I also got my wife to 'drive by' so I could here it too. What are we like :o

I often open the sunroof or lower the windows to get more of it, even hunt down underground carparks or tunnels for added effect...

Loads of benz tuners offer after market exhaust for the r170, And they really unleash the sound, But in a good way, Not like a escort rally car.

All AMG cars are rude sounding! its part of their commitment in styling :)
My C43 AMG sounds absalutly superb!

Joby.

Not an SLK32, but I've had the pleasure of hearing my friend's C32 under full chat, from inside and out.
Inside is a nice grunty V6, with a pleasent whirl from the supercharger.
Outside (from the back at least) is a nice V6 bark. Not nearly as throaty as a V8, but boy is it an aural pleasure!

Hello,

Even my wifes A210 AMG with its little 2.1 sounds great so I should imagine roof down and through a tunnel the SLK32 would be great !!

Thanks for the replies, at the moment I am driving an A200 Turbo but I find it too slow and too sedate, would the E500 be more aggressive sounding than the SLK32 AMG I assume not with it being a toned down relaxed car compared to the AMG being more tuned and having AMG exhausts?

Yes the non-AMG 5 litre cars are very quiet - my SL was virtually silent. Easily fixed by removing the centre muffler though.

Did you find the engine itself gave off a nice note when you were inside the car or was that quite restrained too?

It was virtually silent, even with the hood down. If you pushed hard there was a bit of exhaust note, but mostly induction and mechanical noise.

I swapped to an AMG back box, which made virtually no difference. Then replaced the centre muffler with a straight-through pipe, much better. Still not noisy, but at least you can hear it.

I took out my centre box and put straight pipes as well and the sound is much better now. I have left the AMG back box on and not touched that at all.

So I guess if you really want to make it sound louder you really need to remove the centre box.:) :) :)
