SLK SRS Light Problem

Hi,

I've got a problem with the SRS light on my 2005 SLK. It's a bit of a weird problem as it only ever happens when I drive my car first thing in the morning.

The SRS light stays on for what may be anywhere from a few hundred yards to 10 miles and then goes out. After this any time I then drive my car during the same day eveything is fine.

I took car to my local MB dealer and they told me it needed a new seat recognition mat. They then told me it would cost £800 + VAT for the part and take 2 hours to fit it. I then had to go for a lie down to recover from the shock!

This sounds very expensive to me. Is there anything else the problem could be and are they ripping me off?

Is this something I could get done at an independent garage for a more reasonable fee?

Thanks in advance.
