SLK Steering Play

How much steering play is normal on a 99 SLK230K? I know the early ones are known for imprecise steering but with the engine off I can move the wheel about 1.5 inches each way without much perceptible movement of the road wheels. Improves a with engine running but still feels sloppy. Not mentioned in MOT 3000 miles ago (done before I bought it). If this is excessive what are the expected wear items? No clonking noticed just seems a bit vague.

I had an 03 320 and it didn't have that much play iirc.

All MB steering play is measured with the engine running, and the wheels straight ahead

Thanks folks. 03 was probably better anyway as I gather they were improved around 2000.
