Can anyone clarify the operation of the electric windows on the R170 Slk230. When closing the door, are the windows supposed to lower slightly in order to let the window glass enter the rubber channels at the top of the door, and then automatically raise again to make the seal? Mine do not, and it means lowering and raising the window if one is inside the car, which is fine, but from outside it seems I need to press hard on the glass itself in order to push it back sufficiently to seal it.
If the operation should be 'automatic', which sensor/fuse controls it?

i should perhaps clarify thre above thread - My car is a 1998 SLK230 Kompressor

I am pretty sure they should lower slightly. They certainly do on our later SLK and CLK.

I,ve just found another thread on here: (slk230 door seal), which is quite informative. and it seems to confirm that the windows do not lower automatically, but that there is a form of cardboard stop, somewhere inside the door, which can give trouble.

Pre facelift 170's don't drop and adjust. Can't remember the change over date off the top of my head, but think yours is a pre facelift so may be that the window needs lowering and tilting on the regulator to get it shutting flushly and without using too much force to shut.

Yes, mine is certainly pre-facelift, has the AMG body styling plus all the other goodies. Where do I find the 'regulator' - presumably I need to dismantle the door liner to get at it (I've already done this on the passenger side to replace a faulty Bose Loudspeaker) is there a diagram anywhere showing the electric window mech. and how to adjust it?

To adjust the tilt of the glass in and out (toward/away from seal) there are two rubber grommets on the bottom of the door, remove these and there are two nuts (think 10mm) that slide on the frame of the door and adjust the tilt. Move the nuts to the outside of the door and the glass tilts into the roof seal, visa versa. Be careful not to go too far or the glass can shatter if it's too tight.

The up and down is done on the regulator, remove the door card then the waterproof membrane, keep the window switch plugged in, lower the window until you can see the bottom of the glass, where it bolts to the regulator, undo the bolts and move it up down/forward back as needed. Tighten bolts, shut to check. Finally refit everything check fit again, adjust if required.

Ours didn't.

No R170 models per or post facelift open and close the windows on opening or shutting the doors.
