SLK320 not starting - where do I start?

I assume it is actually faulty !!!!!

Have you tested it first before going down the road of potential escalation?

It should read 1k ohms if good.

Spraying it with freezer will help to break the seal

Stevesey. Crikey! That's not what I wanted to hear! But at least I'm not alone in having a jammed cps.

Skemball. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't tested it, mainly because it is so arkwardly positioned that I couldn't get my meter probes on to the terminals. I'll try again tomorrow.

Television. Freezer?? Do you mean the stuff for freezing central heating pipes? Do you think that would help?

Yes this is what is used now as shock treatment and has the same effect as heating

My patience is fast running out and I've already reached the decision never to buy another Mercedes! From the research I've been doing it seems that a faulty CPS is a VERY common problem on these cars. My SLK has only done 22,000 miles so I suspect that as the cars get older the fault will be even more common, and in particular a lot of owners or mechanics will really struggle to remove a CPS which has siezed into its housing.

I've been soaking mine in penetrating oil for 2 weeks now but still can't extract it. By levering with a long screwdriver against the side of the shallow recess in which it sits, I can flex the visble top part slightly, so it is obviously stuck further down the cylindrical hole. Yesterday I levered with a rectangular steel bar against the plastic part with the hole for the retaining screw, and after applying a lot of force managed to rotate it by a few degrees. I thought I had finally made real progress but I cant manage to rotate it back again, so perhaps it has just jammed even tighter or even distorted below the surface. I'll keep trying with the WD40 but at some point I might have to take the decision to try to break up the CPS and try to extract it in pieces. It's either that or take the whole engine out!
