Hi,

Looking for some advice please. Breaks are 'squealing' under all conditions. Have done 30K miles, original pads and discs.

No indication from Brake Wear system but MB main dealer has checked car over and says discs are 'pitted and scored' and both front and back discs as well as pads all round need replaced he says. Car still under warranty, MB says wear and tear.

Any thoughts? Is this normal useage?

Cheers

I think mine squeaked a bit when I was a bit gentle on them. but not too bad.

I shall await a more educated response before telling you go out and give a bit of boot and see if that cures it.

Squeaking can be a result of under use due to glazing of the pads, and other reason can be the anti-squeal shims are missing or the grease has been washed off.
Pitted disks shows lack of use.

Give them major attack of hard braking and hard acceleration an see if it helps, alternatively have them re-greased.

Mileage you get out of brakes is dependent on a number of different factors such as how heavy you are on the brakes and the type of service the vehicle sees - motorway cruising will use them less than local supermarket trips for instance.

In general if you've got 30,000 miles out of them you're perhaps in the bottom to middle of expectations so I don't think it's unreasonable to be considered fair wear and tear.

Did you buy the car as a used approved car from an MB dealer?

If so, you have another option...

If yours is a 55 reg, the MOT will be coming up. The Tier1/2 warranties have MOT failure cover. If they're that badly scored/pitted, then they will possibly fail the MOT, and hey presto, new disks.

Happened to me. I couldn't believe a three year old AMG failed on scored brake discs. Got it over the pit in the garage and found the score, and couldn't believe it had failed.

When I checked the warranty info and documents from buying the car I noticed the reference to MOT failure cover. My dealer couldn't believe it when the warranty people approved the claim. I paid for fresh pads (parts only) and they dropped them in at the same time (no additional labour).

I hope this helps...

Thanks for the feedback so far guys, will get a 2nd opinion and let you know how it goes.

Car is indeed a 55 plate, 30,000 miles mainly motor driving, serviced by MB main dealer since new. Getting new tyres on the front next week, will get the tyre dealer to assess the discs whilst he's doing the tyres as it is also a brake specialists outlet.

Cheers.

Great info,

I've read through the warranty brochure and can't find any reference to Tier 1/2?. In fact it doesn't list what is covered, where can I find a definitive list of items covered?

Thanks again

Tier 1 is the warranty you can buy from MB themselves when the manufacturer warranty which comes with a new car has expired. If effectively gives the same coverage as the new car warranty. A Signature approved car from an MB main dealer also gives the same coverage too.

I'm pretty sure that Tier 1 and Signature both have MOT failure cover - not 100% sure if the new car warranty does, never checked, but worth a shot.

Tier 2 is a more restricted version, again from MB, and is for vehicles with 60k or more miles at the point the warranty is taken out, but again I think includes MOT failure cover.

Was your car new or secondhand when you purchased the car?

And if it was secondhand was it from a main MB dealer?

If it was secondhand from an MB dealer it should be in the book booklet somewhere, look for MOT failure cover.

If new, not sure if MOT failure cover will be included, but again look for MOT failure cover.

Update

Just got some new Michelin Pilots on the front and they look lovely!

Had all the discs checked whilst the wheels were off and the manager of the brake specialists said the discs were "all spotless"! Very little wear and tear on any of the discs. Pads are around 50-60% worn but otherwise look good.

Not happy with Merc Main Dealer!
