Slow internet connection - ethernet card problem??

try this link: Speed Test

download FTP - 100MB - and see how long it takes. (should be no more than 5mins on a 39Mbps down)
just trying to narrow down if this is HTTP traffic only - i.e. you may be using a proxy for 80/443 traffic.

Thanks - tried this and after 5 mins it had only downloaded 20 MB.

Check the properties of your network interface in device manager and ensure that no ecom-mentalists settings have been enabled. I had a PC two weeks ago that started slowing down and dropping off the network. For whatever reason various green modes had been enabled, once these were disabled all good again.

On this particular ethernet card we did the following so look for similar:

Auto Disable Gigabit > Disabled
Green Ethernet > Disable
Energy Efficient Ethernet > Disable

Thanks - can't see any options like that available for my card though.

So ... running out of ideas, I took the PC apart today to see what it had in the way of spare slots (it needed a clean out anyway :) ) and have now ordered a PCI network card for £6.99 delivered. There's no Win10 driver for it but it seems it will work with the built-in drivers, albeit only at 100 Mbps. Worth a try, anyway.

Once its in it looks like I just need to go into setup and set the onboard LAN controller to disabled.

So just to close this out, the new LAN card arrived today. Five mins to fit it, five mins to get into startup and figure out where to disable the onboard LAN controller, then we were away. It just worked once the PC had booted (no messing with drivers or anything), and download speed is now back to normal :thumb:
