Hi all.My c270 CDI seems to take ages to reach normal operating temperature (90 c),around 3 to 4 miles.Car covered 89K.The anti freeze is ready for changing(last done 2 years ago with blue anti freeze at mb dealers) so im going to have a go myself to change anti freeze &thermostat.
How easy,or difficult of a job is it? I have changed them on 90 s vauxhalls &fords, but on my 270cdi access looks a bit tight.Any info&tips will be appreciated. Also is thre a long life anti freeze i can use, lasting 3 years or longer?
Also, has anyone used the "motormax" coolant additive?
see here http://www.firefreezemotormax.com/faqs.htm
if so dose it work&what are your views?

On my w210 i just pulled off the bottom hose refiited hose and refilled with coolant no big deal.

I used the red oats stuff good for 4 years.

Wifes has got the blue stuff in and thats next on my list.

Has yours got the auxiliary heater being a diesel?

I dont think so,heater only works with engine running,no provision for aux heater when engine off,far as i know.
Im going to disconnect both top&bottom rad hoses&themostat to flush through with hosepipe.Praying i dont shear bolts on thermo housing!

Lynall,i cant see any hoses or set up like that under my bonnet.
do you mean i should have the REST (residual heat) function? I dont have the REST button on my Heater dash controls.

Oops My apologies Lynall, after a closer look it appears my car dose have the "REST" button for the heater! I have never used this option for the heater, but on reading the mb handbook it sounds a good addition.
Why do ask if my car has the heater AUX, Lynall?

Why not undo the radiator drain screw and what about the engine block drain.?
You need to undo the block drain for a full change.

Dieselman im going to give mine a rad flush & engine block flush, but im not sure where the block drain plug is.Can you tell me please?

Reason i mention the aux heater as modern diesels are so efficent they take ages to warm up so manufacturers are fitting aux heaters to assist in the warm up process, ie rover 75, range rover, x5, disco 3, early td5, galaxy, some freelanders the list goes on and on.

Basically start engine and if its cold enough the aux starts up to assist in getting engine to max temp asap.

I fitted mine as i cant stand a cold car:).

Dieselman. is the rad drain plug on the near side of car? I have what appears to be a red plastic screw type plug in bottom of rad, which faces down to the floor on near side of car. Will that be it?
Had underbody engine covers off today to change oil&filter, and had a look. Also noticed a split rubber on lower arm ball joint!Oh well it is Fri 13th!
Going to change that tomorrow.

Thanks.Im so glad its got one as the hoses look difficult to get undone.I would do the coolant&thermostat change tomorrow, but im still waiting for the motormax additive.
Any tips for changing thermostat? What i did notice is the stat housing bolts are more easly accesable if the oil filter is screwed out &removed to get to the bolts.I will have to be careful not to get any coolant into the oilfilter housing though.

I"ll make further enquiries to see if its got a aux heater(I"ll ask at mb dealers tomorrow.)Its warms up quicker now the weather is mild but id expect it to.saying that just checked mb handbook&coolant capacity is8.9L for my C270 CDI.Thats a lot of liquid to heat up in Cold weather.
I have purchased the thermostat & im now waiting for the motormax coolant additive,Then i"ll fit stat, flush engine&rad, then hopfully it should warm up a bit quicker.
