SLS AMG + 178MPH GOLF BALL = WORLDS' FARTHEST GOLF SHOT CAUGHT IN A MOVING CAR

Formula 1TM legend and DTM driver David Coulthard and professional golfer Jake Shepherd set a Guinness World Record yesterday (30 May 2012) at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Surrey, as part of a viral film for Mercedes-Benz UK.

David, who was driving the awesome 571hp Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster at 120mph, caught a golf ball in the cockpit of the moving car which was 275 metres from the tee, and hit by Jake at an astonishing 178mph. This amazing achievement secured the world record for the furthest golf shot caught in a moving car in only the second attempt of the day.

The outstanding feat of skill was captured on film and will be launched in early July to celebrate the power of the SLS AMG Roadster which, thanks to its AMG hand-assembled M 159 V8 engine, rockets to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds.

David Coulthard said: "This world record attempt is definitely one of the most unusual things I've ever been asked to do with a car! Jake Shepherd was great to work with and the performance of the SLS AMG Roadster made driving to catch a mid-air golf ball even more exciting. I am honoured to have received the Guinness World Record for the furthest golf shot caught in a car."

David George,Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars Marketing Director, concluded: "We thought we'd do something exciting to celebrate this special car, and our association with golf ahead of the upcoming Open Championship. It was great to set a new world record in the process thanks to an amazing effort from David and Jake."

 ...and this is useful, how?

A guy hits a golf ball and another guy, somehow, catches it in his car whilst driving at over 178mph down a runway. Meanwhile, it has involved at least eighteen people, some of whom are filming the others who are also filming each other and the driver and passenger of the car [nice car]. Have I got it right?

I guess I've missed the point of this 'stunt'. I'd be grateful if somebody cleverer than me would please tell me what this actually proves.

On the plus side, I'm glad to see that the occupants of the car are wearing crash helmets, like any sensible person would do if some crazy was whacking a golf ball at them as they drove by the local golf-bat playing place at 178mph.

And what, please, is a 'viral' film?

I found it incredibly useful.

After two practice runs, I can now drive past my house at the correct speed for Mrs TDE1 to hurl my sandwiches, from the bedroom window, through the open sunroof when I forget them in the morning.

Good work fellas!

Well , i'm over the moon that they can do it.

I'm a Hardcore Mercedes Enthusiast after all ;)

Now that is useful. Why didn't I think of that? Mrs tac says that my lack of imagination here simply displays why we only buy M-B cars but don't write the publicity for them.

Personally, I'd like to see them catch something useful with the car, like a large-size thin crust margherita pizza with quadri stagioni topping and lots of oregano.

There's water content in that. Risk of inducing rust on a Modern Mercedes, best stick to dried foods:ban:

A lot of people would like to see them catch the rust before it devours their cars :D

Sounds very similar to something I saw recently on the US version of Top Gear where the presenters went to purchase a suitable super car for a mysterious celebrity. One of the challenges was to see if the cars the presenters had chosen were quicker than a driven golf ball...

Transmission – BBC Top Gear Top Gear USA: Supercars dominate this Tuesday «

Which supercar will be most appropriate for their celebrity client? At a private airport in Kingston NY, the hosts race a golf ball struck by a man with a very large swing – while attempting to keep a hairpiece atop their mops with the top down. So the car must be quick, and gentle on hairstyles…

I assume this will be entered into the Guinness book of Records...

This reminds me of an Alfa stunt taking the world record for skiing on the roof of car about 30 years ago. Someone with his skis strapped onto the roof of a GTV6 while it drove up a runway at 120mph. Mystified me then and still does.
