Smart engine replacement cost?

I know we've a few smart car owners on here so I thought I'd ask.

How much is a recon/exchange smart engine nowadays?

Only I've been offered a scruffy but running 100,000 mile smart for £700 and it might be just the job for my commute.

Its drinking a little oil and the clutch needs doing but I was just trying to work out the costs of putting it right to see if its worthwhile or not.

it must have had two engines in it as the engines dont have a very long life, around 50,000 miles and they start to melt spark plugs etc

I used to see advertisements for recon engines at around £600 + fitting... not sure nowadays though.

For a decent secondhand / recon engine you are looking about £750 + fitting. For a rebuild of existing engine to a better spec £1250 - £1500 (inc fitting) not many of these make it past 70,000 if they are doing motorway work.

I would avoid a second hand engine unless the seller can prove its very low miles or recent re-con unless your prepared to pull it out and fit yet another one very soon, its false economy.

Olly ( who is a Smart specialist ) has always said that the engines don't last past 70k

He is probably the best person to talk to Sp!ke.

My Smart for 2 (52 plate) has just turned 60K, I've had it since it was at 22K. It gets used on my daily commute and delivers a genuine 50MPG despite my right foot! it burns a little oil - particularly when on the motorway when its normally flat out. I don't record it but I guess I top it up (0.5l) once between oil changes.

I've added a sump plug to to sump so that I can drain the oil properly and change the it(Mobil 1) every 5K rather than the recommended 10K.

My understanding is that they need looking after - regular oil changes and let them cool down a little before you turn off - but otherwise mine is doing ok. Will be sorry to see it go when it does have to. (2 seats is not enough any more)

I'd buy a young one thats had the "one careful lady owner" and then look after it rather than one that will probably need a lot doing to it.

I dont have a problem in fitting the engine myself but I guess there is likely to be good refurbishers and bad ones with some people doing the job right and others cutting corners.

£700 seems like an average price.

A smart with 339k miles I bet that has more rattles than mothercare
