I've just had 4 new Conti tyres fitted to the missus's R170 as it only had very worn budget tyres which were not suitable for a fastish vehicle considering winter is almost upon us. (r/w/d etc) 2 DAYS later I receive a phone call from her to inform me of a flat tyre noticed by a collegue at work. He inflated the tyre (Rear £120 each) and she took it to a well known place for repair 2 mins drive away. After inspecting the tyre it was evident she had driven it all the way from home to work punctured and this lovely new boot was now landfill.
She has never had a puncture on any previous vehicle with budget tyres and now this happens.:wallbash:
Can anyone unfortunate enough better 20 miles approx for a new tyre ?

Just very, very bad luck.
Normally, new tyres offer better puncture resistance than worn tyres for obvious reasons.
Just one of those things I am afraid.

Bad luck indeed .

I'd be wondering whether it was actually punctured ( did they find a nail or suchlike in it ? ) or was the deflation the result of improper fitting ( not sealed properly onto the rim ) ?

If the tyre showed no evidence of being punctured , and considering it deflated within 20 miles of being fitted ( notwithstanding your wife not noticing and driving on it ) I'd be wondering whether the original fitters ought to be replacing it FOC ?

yep I would look for the puncture as the new pirelli's on my E500 are still leaking after changing them last month.. they havent sealed properly against the rim..

reminds me i need to get that sorted..

Pontoneer+Jay - Just out of interest what causes a tyre NOT to seal properly?

Damaged/corroded rims and/or insufficient/improper application of sealant at the time of fitting ; just possibly damage to the bead of the tyre by improper handling by the fitter .

I know someone who did 20 yds and needed a new car :D Back in the early days of my career I worked as a geologist which meant visiting on land drilling rigs and examining core samples. In 1985 on my way back to the lab one afternoon I was passing a Ford main dealers in a long wheel base Land Rover loaded up to the hilt with core samples. A guy who had just taken delivery of his brand new Ford Sierra Jelly Mould pulled straight off the forecourt right out in front of me, well I braked but had no chance of stopping due to the short distance involved, ended up T boning him and crushing the other side of the car up against a set of traffic lights, the driver was unhurt but in tears. Land Rover 1 Ford Jelly Mould 0:D

And I bet the Landy soldiered on for a while afterwards ?

Hardly any damage at all to the Landy, bit of a bent bumper and dented wing if I remember right, just drove it back as normal :)

Still got that steering wheel imprint in your chest though, eh? :D

Pontoneer, Jaymanec. The tyre defo had a very small puncture as this was found before removing from the rim, looks like a nail had entered and did not stay in. The only shining light is now she checks the car thouroughly before setting off. Maybe I'll teach her to check all fluids also or is this pushing it.

Perhaps you need to tell her that she needs to change the oil every so often, just to make sure it's OK..;)

I heard a very similar story involving a Ford Scorpio that had been on order for 12 weeks.
It made it to the end of the forcourt before sticking out into the main road and was promptly cleaned up by a large lorry..

Nah far too dangerous; you will end up with the master cylinder topped up with engine oil :)

I knew someone who topped up their battery because the dynamo (that dates it!) squeaked.

Topped it up with oil!

Sounds reasonable to me - a good wife should always make sure there is enough beer in the fridge , whisky in the decanter etc. before she goes out .:D
