Hope this might help somebody.

Anyone who has creaking steering when turning the wheel may well have a drop link problem.
At first I thought my drivers side suspension upper rubber parts were worn, however applying some lube the creaking was still there. My W209 CLK developed this fault despite the drop links being replaced only 10 months ago. This is what fooled me and lead me down the wrong road initially thinking it was steering rack / column problem - basically it only seemed to appear when the car was warm (the column passes very close to the exhaust manifold). I took the link out and low and behold the upper joint was almost seized solid.

I know they are cheap but as its the Easter weekend (and I'm tight!!) I soaked it in Plus Gas, free'd it off then repacked it with grease. Sorted :thumb:.
Don't know how long it will last but at least I will know straight away what the problem is.
