It's gone all quiet in Hampshire...

...oh and the lack of damage on the Vauxhall is a tad disturbing

It looks right to me. The MB would have been braking heavily (shedding those crucial 5mph) and the nose would be dropped as a result. The van was stationary so its bumper absorbed the majority of the impact. On the MB, the bumper was low and so the lights, grille, bonnet and wings took a proportion of the impact.

It was the same a few weeks ago when somebody drove into my rear when I was stationary at a roundabout. They baked heavily and the result looked the same. My rear bumper took most of the impact (but it bent the rear bulkhead :( ) but the entire front of his car was trashed - except the bumper, which didn't look too bad.

It looks right to me.
Hopefully I have been polite with my comments but if this looks 'right' then did your insurance company act as quick? To me it is more than suspect and is it possible this is a well worded sales pitch?

I am not exactly sure what you mean, John, but as it happens, I have never seen insurance work so quick:
Sunday 11.00am: My car is shunted in the rear.
Monday 9.15am: Other party's insurance company phone me to tell me their client has admitted full responsibility and they will pay for all repairs and supply an equivalent loan car (BMW 5 series).
Wednesday: Local MB garage phone me to say they have been faxed an authorisation to proceed (they hadn't even seen the car or prepared an estimate) and the car was booked in. It's bottom is being smoothed out as I write.

I think John thought you were saying that the whole story seems to add up while a assume you were just saying that the damage to the Astra "looks right to me"!

I think andy_k hit the nail on the head with his comment.

I wonder if some feller is typing into a white van man forum...............................

..............'So I was sitting in m van when you wouldn't believe wha happened'

Andy_K has picked up on my suggestion,
I agree with what your saying but look at the time period of this incident again. The owner has contacted the insurance company, the insurance company have allegedly contacted an assessor, this assessor has then gone to the garage, assessed the damage, prepared a report, sent it to the insurance company, who have then agreed with the car owner a price. The owner has allegedly agreed to the offer, taken the money and is now allegedly selling the vehicle as aregistered Cat C write-off and all within 2 working days? I still need convincing this is not a sales pitch and have you noticed what is happening?

Yes Insurance Companies can act fast...I lost my spectacles in the canal (helping some one moor up their boat) on a friday - that afternoon went to opticians to get an examination and ordered new glasses. They said my insurance could cover it. Monday called the insurers - gave them the opiticans number and the price of the specs..cheque arrives Thursday.....get glasses Thursday afternoon....

Thats pretty good service so I have no AXA to grind on that one..:bannana:

Had someone pull out in front of me 6 years ago and write my Cavalier off. Car was a blatant write-off, so found a nice Vectra in VX local dealers that afternoon and signed the paper work the next day. Then had to ring insurance to transfer cover - girl was a little confused as the Cav hadn't even been collected from the accident site (I'd stripped all personal stuff accessories while waiting to be picked up) yet alone inspected. Cover was transfered Ok and the Cav kept on cover for a week just in case someone tripped over it. Picked Vectra up two days later, before the insurance company had even inspected the Cav.

Hard to believe they can do the whole lot in two days.

Was in the States this summer - my sister drives a Rav 4...Well it overheated and according to the dealer it had blown headgasket. As it is an alluminium engine with 200,000 miles on it he said its not worth repairing.

Well to cut a long story short - she fancied a change - drove a corolla - liked it and we struck the deal. Within an hour (yes one hour) money was in their account - plates transferred to a new car - insurance company informed and we were driving away in a new car....Now that is fast...:bannana:

Well, as an ex-C43 owner I think I'm qualified to say the following:

The C43 has some of the most powerful brakes of any car I've driven, and if you drove into that van in the circumstances you describe you must have either a) been looking in the footwell at the time or b) travelling a lot, lot faster than the urban speed limit. Neither of which will win you much admiration on this forum.

I can also say that if that's worth 3 grand, then I'm the pope. With a cat C to its name, it's now effectively worthless. If you're lucky, you might make a few quid by stripping the interior, but do us all a favour and just put the rest in the crusher. Another one bites the dust..

ok to the people that know more than me...

ok one thing first... please dont accuse me for speeding when NO one was there, no one knows what type of road i was on, what the weather and condition of road was like, thank you for those who did/are surporting this thread, it nice to know there are people out there who generally does'nt automatically persume other peoples situations and outcomes for them.:o

i have been on and off throughout the day to my insurrance company, and they will be sending me paperwork to fill out. I had to make my decision up and i have agreed to take what they are offering minus a % for the car to be returned to me as salvage.

This all happend last thursday afternoon/evening.

I was travelling at 20-25mph.

I passed 4 parked cars, before i entered the left hand bend.

Im now on the righthand side of the road,

The cars that were parked on the lefthand side, followed around the bend.

As i entered that bend, i saw the white astra van in the road.

I slammed on the brakes.

The white Van was stationary parked on his side of the road (which was blocking the road off)

I hit the van at a speed of below 20- 25mph obviously as im braking!!

The road was abit greasy.

The guy in the van was'nt wearing his seat belt.

He accused me as soon as we got out either cars saying " you must of been doing over 50!!" Now theres no way that was the case! if i had then the back end of my car would of been whipped out! So automatically he's blaiming me before we even talk to each other properly. In what may seem as a guilty consionce.
Then he calmed down as of i did to, and he said he had just dropped off somthing to a work freind, who lives on the bend.

The guy gave me all his details and said "dont worry, just claim as his work will pay out and wont want to be shamed as a company".

Then all he wanted is to get the cars off as he didnt want the police to turn up.

Today.. as i've been on the phone to insurrance company, they have clearly asked if there was white lines painted down the center of the road, so i checked and there was'nt. The other driver has also been contacted by insurrance company and acctepting no liabilty, As with me.

Its being treated as a 50/50 and i await to heaar more.

So basically He wasnt on his side... he was infact blocking a road on a bend blinded by parked cars!

I have accepted what the insurrance company have offered me and my car back. The cat c has been placed on my car now so it will show that upon future HPI checks.

I cant explain this situation any more clearer i dont think.

thanks for you thoughts tho,

I am not just pitching for a sale, i am telling my story to you all, of what happend to my car that im in two minds of what to do with. Asking wether i should sell it as it is, or break it,

Sorry but i thought forums are about chatting and being able to explain things about simarlar interests with people alike and get advice from each other that has interset in same things (MB's)

Thanks who did'nt slate my thread off.

Joby.

Is it because im 28 yrs old and love cars and love showing them at high class shows throughtout the year? i cant understand why i am being slated so imence!! Not a nice way of including a MB lover at all.

Joby.

be a respecfull person and join such a pleasnt forum and get slated. :(

how can a car have a cat C placed on it without it being inspected by an assessor/garage?

your estimate is 3-4k to put the car right - I doubt any insurance company would write a car off when the damage was less than 30% of the car - I think most work on a 60%-70% figure

Maybe you weren't speeding but you were certainly driving too fast for the conditions - before you jump down my throat saying you weren't, I suggest you think carefully because had you been driving according to the conditions and being aware of potential hazards you would not have hit the van.

Sorry mate but I remain to be convinced

Andy
