Spare Wheel Won't Fit In Boot...

Mercedes C180 Kompressor Coupe
Hi All,
I have a C180 Coupe, w203.

I've only just brought the car and i'm new to Mercedes. The car came with an alloy 'spare' wheel.
This however was in the main boot compartment, the tyre is inflated. When i lift the boot carpet, i can clearly see a space in which this wheel (or a wheel) is supposed to fit - except this one doesn't.

I've let the air out, but this makes no difference, it simply will not fit.

Am i missing something obvious here?

Thanks

You're missing the space saver spare. What does it say in your handbook?

As above, the previous owner has not got the space saver wheel supplied with the car and has replaced it with an alloy the correct size.

Only two alternatives I can see. Get yourself a spacesaver wheel (eBay have them usually) or put up with having the spare wheel in the boot instead of the wheel well.

Thanks for the quick reply both, the alloy that came with the car though is one like the attached picture. Its Black, and not the same as the ones that are on the car.

It doesn't fit, so can't be right, but, when i look on E-bay for space saver spare w203 coupe, the images that come up are the same as the one i have.

Also, the car has come with the warning triangle, which is in a plastic holder, it looks like it should 'fit' somewhere, but, again this is currently just loose in the boot (in its holder....)

It looks like mine, where the tyre is inflated by a pump and deflates back to a "stored" size after use.

Is there an electric pump?

Thanks C, though everyone knows it's Carlsberg .

If it has been used, then this is the process to get it back in (taken from the handbook), but basically you have to take the valve out to get all of the air out.

Stowing a used collapsible emergency spare wheel*
If you wish to stow a used collapsible emer- gency spare wheel* in the vehicle, you must follow the steps below. You will otherwise not be able to stow it. We recommend that this work is carried out at a specialist workshop.
! Only place the collapsible emergency spare wheel* in the vehicle when it is dry. Moisture may otherwise enter the boot.
Unscrew the valve cap from the valve.
X Remove the valve extractor from the vehi-
cle tool kit.
X Unscrew the valve insert from the valve and release the air.
i Fully deflating the tyres can take a few minutes.
X Screw the valve insert back into the valve. X Screw the valve cap back on.
X Put the protective film provided for the
emergency spare wheel* over the collaps-
ible emergency spare wheel*.
X Store the collapsible emergency spare
wheel* in the spare wheel well under the luggage compartment.
X Use the retaining screw to pierce through the protective film and fasten the collapsi- ble emergency spare wheel* in place.

Does this help, this is from a CLC, but should be similar. The triangle fits across the spare wheel when it is seated properly.

Thanks all. So, it is a collapsable spare, and although unused, it has been inflated for some reason, just took it to local petrol station and its at 35psi. I've got the handbooks, and read the guide above, which is really helpful. It appears though that the air compressor and tool kit are missing (perhaps that's why its already inflated....). The tow eye, and wheel brace, along with the wheel nuts are all still there though.

Guess I'll have to take it to local tyre shop to have it deflated, and keep my eyes peeled for a compressor on ebay .

Also, the triangle now fits perfectly, thanks.

Really impressed with this forum and how quick you guys all responded. Truly, my thanks.

Any old electric compressor will do.

Regarding the collapsible wheel, the 911 I had came with one. It came with a tool that you stuck into the valve stem and it bled all the air out and the tyre shrunk back to size. Does Merc not have something similar?

Hi, I think it did, as part of the tool kit, but, that, along with the compressor in missing. I'll hunt around on E-bay...

Thanks again A-Team.

Air pumps in sainsburys garage £5.99 you can not go wrong, even better if possible when or if you get a puncher pump it up with air pump to get to garage, then you don't even have to get the spare out, simples!

Valve removal key - 99p on ebay...
