Squeaky folding mirror

Did you post once for each mirror? :)

Russ

ya i had too post for drivers and passenger side NOT ?

i dont know what happened it just happened a well

i have a look at the type i use tomorrow in the garage and ill let you know

PTFE shouldn't be used on rubber, apparently - only stops squeaking on metal, wood and plastics. (according to the can! - which says 'not to be used on rubber'......).

I bought some silicone spray for the rubber squeak, and some white lithium spray for some door hinges that need protecting...

£5 from Halfords. Job done!

Well, I think I'll use the can of worms, that this thread has opened......:D

Sounds good to me, forgot you wanted something for the rubber - I was thinking of the mechanism!

Glad you got it sorted,

Martyn

The folding mirrors on my W203 squeaked all the time until I tried the PTFE solution and it worked but was a bit messy and required regular (every few weeks) re-application.

Digging around in the workshop manual I stumbled across a document called "Glue sliding tape onto outside mirror paneling" (doc ref number AR88.70-P-9040-01P)

In this document is the part number for some pre-cut sliding tapes that stick on the contact surface between the mirror housing and the rubber seal. They cost £2.50 for a pair from Merc and once fitted (2 weeks now) the squeaking that followed locking the car has stopped! The part number is A2118110096 and the description is "PAD" and you will need 2 of them.

I have PDF'd the pages from the workshop manual but at 164kb they are too big for this forum (+ I can't make them any smaller). If anyone is interested I'll put them in a dropbox and publish the link.

ccp, now that's the answer I've been looking for! :)
The mechanism of the mirrors is fine, it just the rubber surround that squeaks on the last part of the fold-in movement so I'll be off to the dealers on Monday!

Thanks!

I have pretty much the same situation - it seems like it is the rubber seal that makes contact with the mirror.

It used to be worse but I tried the bike stuff and it did improve it.

Will have a stab at this.

MB sells a pad that you can put on the mirror like a sticker which stops the squeeky noises. For W211 the part number is 211 811 00 96. Ask your dealer one for your model.

That's the same thing CCP posted isn't it?

Excellent advice from all, thanks! Now my mirrors don't sound like a herd of angry mice folding in and out! 3in1 also make a silicon lubricant in a yellow spray can which is what I used. There is a tiny opening on the inboard lower side of the folded mirrors which is excellent to spray a good blast through using the little 'straw' attachment.

I have recently learnt that WD40, whilst being a brilliant lubricant and water disperser right out of the can - but it does actually become hydroscopic (attracts water) after it is fully dry which can make it unsuitable for using as a surface coating on aluminium etc.

Hi, i have a clk that has the drivers side mirror stuck.

The passenger sidewirks fine on opening and closing the locks etc. however the drivers side is folded in. Do you think spraying with lithium grease will help as i cant hear any squeaking when i press the mirror button. Any suggestions?

Stuck or just squeaking? If its stuck try the following which works on my passenger side mirror:
Turn engine on
Fold in mirror manually with switch
Open driver side door
Fold out mirror manually with switch

If that doesn't work, you need to food them out via Star Diagnosis System. I had to do this 3 x in 3 years now. Pretty annoying.

Hi, thanks or your responseon this.

I will give this a try, I am assuming a specialist will have access to the Star Diagnosis System?

It definitley isnt squeaking, however in the past there had been some fax like noises when it folded closed.

Anyone with access to a SD and knowing where to look for can do it.
