All,

Looking for ideas on exhaust box for my w124 300CE (1990, G). I was intending to put on a pair of original square AMG end pipes to my current system but have been advised it would be better to have a full stainless steel box put in place first and de-cat too....

Any advice on what effect this has on performence / economy / price, etc appreciated.

Thanks!

I would say is best with a performance backbox rather than s-still

The best choice would be a complete performance system (not just the backbox), like Remus or Eisenmann, etc.

But the problem is that none of them sell a full kit, only the backboxes, which cost like £500-700. So it's not worth it in my opinion, unless you really don't know what to do with your money.

Although, there's a choice of custom made stainless steel system from a private garage, but I'm not sure about that...CKS Performance do a "catalyst backward" system for £450 fitted?

Thanks guys. Yes I've had a few silly quotes so far. Such a shame as I really wanted to get the AMG end pipes fitted. Maybe it'll have to be a weld job ;-)

Look:My plan was to buy those tail pipes and have a s-still system with the AMG ones, would have still gone for it if my remus did not sound as it does :D

Let me add my 500E cents here.
You could get a factory non kat system direct from Mercedes and have it coated by Jet Hot or others. That takes care of the front pipes.
I am not sure if your car has a center resonator or not but you could do a two into one pipe and then add your choice of back box. Magnaflow seems to be the best bang for the buck when it comes to money vs sound.
By doing that you'd save some weight and eliminate the kats as well.
If your car has a Lambda sensor it's easy enough to buy a bung, drill a hole and weld it on.
It seems all AMG did was weld tips on a standard back box, at least in the early days before Sebring in AT made the silencers for them and Mercedes.
Kind Regards,

Ron

Hi Ron,any updates on your project?I`ve got this for sale if you know anyone http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/classifieds-general-sale/93840-w124-sebring-backbox.html

Sorry to go OT guys

PD Gough in Nottingham recently quoted me £800 for a full stainless system , including downpipes , made to the pattern of the original system . This is for my W126 500SEL and is already a non-cat system .

Thanks. In that case I will get my one checked out and hopefully it will be easy enough to weld the tips on to my standard box. Just hope it will not require cutting my bumpers!

Thanks again.
