The starter motor on my C 180 has jammed and the engine is not turning over. I have looked inside the engine bay but cannot locate the starter motor (so as to wack it with a lump of wood - this got me out of trouble some years back). Can any one tell me the best approach and how easy, or difficult, it is to replace.

Thanks Georgie.

Good point Graeme. It is a C Class 180 Manual 1995 I think it is W202.

Thanks Georgie.

Its bolted to the engine bellhousing at the rear of the engine on the left hand side. access best from under the car. Follow the large supply cable from the battery down to the starter to find it. Check the engine earth strap to the body is OK while you are down there. Access to some of the bolts holding it on can be tricky without the right tools.

Push the car a little and give it another try

Thanks to all who replied. I did say it was manual I don't know what came over me, in fact its auto. I jacked up the car and took off the front wheel and located the starter motor. Using a lump of wood and sledge hammer I wacked it several times and it eventually unlodged. It looks very tight under there and as Graeme says if you do not have the right tools its a tricky job. Whats the chances of it jamming again?

Georgie.
