Hi,

I have seen many threads talking about changing the steering damper.

What are the common symptoms that would suggest a worn steering damper and is this something that needs to be done once the car has done a certain amount of mileage ?

Where is this damper / is it difficult to change ?

Just curious I guess....

Underneath the car, easily accessible if you are below the car!

The damper may be leaking and have little or no resistence. Most seem to only last 60K miles!

definitly DIY, very easy to change, 2 x 17mm bolts and a torque wrench
approx £30
its across the car between the front wheels
looks like a thinnish wheel shock absorber but about the same length
symptoms? vague steering plus other looseness?
tends to leak oil when goosed but mine didnt look bad but it was!
Worth doing after eg 40k miles

Go for it ;)

For E320 Coupe - A124 463 04 32. £28.24 + VAT.
Mine was replaced at 80k. Can't honestly say I noticed much difference - our coupes hardly have the sharpest steering to start with! Certainly not critical but the oil stained my garage carpet!

Thanks a lot for the prompt replies guys...

I will be getting under the car in a few days and will definately check for oil leaking/condition..

Will change if required and report on any difference while driving.

Cheers

Ours made a quiet 'moaning' noise when it was on the way out. Took a while to trace it!

Ive just changed my steering damper as it was starting to look a little tired.
When I got the old one off it had little to no resistance to movement compared to the new one (£18.50 from GSF).
With it fitted the car drives like a new car. Its lost a lot of the uneasy feeling at speed now & the steering has lost a few of the clunks. Time for some new lower ball joints.
