Steering was heavy but the local MB specialist greased up my column 
which helped for a good few months.
During another recent visit I finally decided to have a new column fitted (not cheap!), followed by full wheel alignment.
I now have a different problem, one that is worse than before!
The steering now seems to intermittently lose power, generally when parking up. Previous owner had a new rack / pump installed 10k back so that should be fine.
Local MB is suggesting new rack / recondition existing - surely that shouldn't have failed in such a short space of time?
And why wouldn't I have had this problem before installation of the new column?
