Steering when parked

I always leave my car in gear when parked and if there is a hill turn my wheels in just in case .

Was there not something about corsa's handbeakes comming off in the event of a little bump
But then again it is a vauxhall hehehehehehehehehe

Watchdog the other night - Vectra and Corsa handbrakes flying off unexplained. VX suggested it is related to pulling the handhrabke on with the button pressed (good practice?) and the way the ratchet engages in this case (may not engage properly when you release the button). Anyway a modifiction has been identified so a big recall type program will start soon.

Best bit for me was the guy said his corsa had rolled away six times - obviously not a "in gear and wheels to the kerb" man. Thought he would have learnt and started leaving the car in gear.

the important thing is to ensure the steering lock engages I would have thought, whatever angle that may be.
Why is it important? Surely if the key is not inserted the lock will engage as soon as the wheel is turned, but if some oaf rips out the ignition barrel\steering lock, then it is irrelevant. This is not a criticism, it's a question asked so that I can better educate myself.

On any hill I am in the San Francisco corner and totally agree about leaving the vehicle in gear.

Regards
John

Edit
I watched the Vauxhall issue and noted that in most cases the examiner had to thump the handbrake to get it to fail. Still an issue though and I disagree totally with Vauxhall's observation about not depressing the button.

Your sooo right Nothing like the intelligence of people

popps

Steering locks are being phased out, I do not have one

Really, I am surprised by that. Surely that renders your car accessible to a random tow away.

Have you checked turning the steering with the key nowhere near the car?

its basically the same as driving around a round about for half an hour......so i guess nothing is wrong with it

Not at all, San Fran is mostly a really chilled out place to be. A real party town.

Definitely true :D We've got family in the Bay Area, love being there.

You're right about haveing the wheels turned into the Kerb over there, it's definitely required on the steep hills they have.

As for the original question, can't see why leaving the wheels turned when parking up would cause additional wear. Obviously steering whilst parked is not good.

Thinking back on this Dieselman, it was a post of yours a little while back, when you were talking about the electric lock on a DAS post, I thought, "thats interesting" as I had never had mine locked.

i have a long fabric attachment to my keys and whilst driving happily down the M4 it accidently got caught on my foot and turned the car off.......woooops! had to pull over and stop and start back up!

Not sure what you want us to say to that ibrar.....

This is fascinating - great advice here (do not remove key from ignition whilst driving!)

http://www.carsafe.org/steering_locks.html

OEM transmission locks are pants. SAAB's are the most stolen car in Greater Manchester according to the Tactical Vehicle Unit.

Their advice if you have one is to not take it into Manchester as it is very likely to be stolen due to the ease of defeating the lock.

Aftermarket transmission locks do work well but are messy.

Whilst on the subject of the wheels being on full lock, can someone tell me why the wheels tilt on the camber angle?

This is something i wasn't aware of when i first bought the car and whilst being parked VERY close to a fence, i swapped the lock left to right on the steering and the whole front end of the car mov ed closer to the fence. Without me realising i was touching it, i reversed off and took a little chunk out of my bumper!!

some are really quiet, some not. I bet it has a lock though.

I think it's item 120.

120 is not listed as a part for my car the same as on the 220 and 221 they do not have one, the 211 does have one
