Stop expanding the ULEZ to all the London boroughs in 2023

My issue has never been about stinky old diesels. I’ve never owned a diesel car btw.
My problem is the way Kahn is going about it.
Ditto. I did experiment with two BMW 3 litre diesels two decades ago, but knew straightaway that they weren't engines for people who like to drive.
I'm annoyed by his greenwashed tax on the less well-off which demonstrably won't have a significant difference to pollution around Greater London. This from a man who has studiously looked away when his own administration has failed to address congestion hot spots of his own creation: Hammersmith Bridge and Lewisham being the most obvious examples.

Ah ok - so you said ‘Khans all about the ££££’ quite early on, but if you switch to a compliant car (using the scrappage money if your car is worth sub £2k for a ‘free’ upgrade) he makes no £££…. 🤷‍♂️ So the only reason he makes £££ is because people are adamant in driving an old diesel in London when the fuel savings will be relatively marginal (if any at all) with that usage in comparison to an equivalent petrol.

So do you discount all the positives of the ULEZ then? The potential health benefits don’t matter?
The ULEZ extension isn't about driving ten year old diesels in London. It's about taking money off anyone driving a ten year old diesel a tiny distance in a 250 square mile area around London.

Visiting a grandchild getting stem cell transplant in the Marsden in Sutton? Driving up from Cornwall ? That'll be £12.50, please.

To subsidise empty buses being run through the night in Central London that people don't want to use.

If the ULEZ isn’t about the money it’d be nice to see Kahn donate all the profits to a charity for example or to build a couple of hospitals in London. He’d really make his mark then.

Or give the money to the NHS so the nurses can have a pay rise.

I wonder how does the current ULEZ scheme generate the majority of its income - is it from motorists paying £12.50, or from drivers paying the £180/£90 fine?

What totally baffles me is the vast amount of revenue generated from fines for parking (or forvnot paying Congestion Charge in London), speeding tickets, and other motor offences etc - how come so many people are breaking so many laws.... all the time?

£225 million last year - from central London, obviously.

Two thirds came from "the fee," one third came from PCN fines.

Who pays fines? The time poor, the rich, and those who simply didn't know.

Good idea, maybe if they didn’t have to keep wasting money replacing cameras due to ‘cowardly masked vandals’ stealing or defacing them then something constructive could be done with the revenue. 🤷‍♂️

On a positive note… at least Summer is finally here. 😂

Who knows and in all honesty I couldn’t give a monkeys anyway.

If there ever was a thread that the Mods need to close.....its probably this one!!

Personally, I would like to see a blanket ban on private cars entering busy city centres... but that's just me, I guess.
Not just you. Me 2. But to do so necessitates defining 'busy'

For sure, and still the most sensible idea for the original congestion zone which is a small part of the area inside the North and South Circular.

No European country would be so daft as to ban ten year old diesels in 250 square miles around a city centre.

The natives would be setting fire to their motors on the streets.

.
Paris has already done it and plan to ban even newer vehicles.

I think there is a larger proportion in London for whom the amounts are 'chuck money' so they're just not bothered.

And then there are those who can't afford it but are simply irresponsible. London is large enough there will be plenty of them too.

I've worked with a few people who just seem to rack up charges on penalties and unnecessary expenditure in their lives.

Where I’m working in Oxford the job is surrounded by 2hr parking bays

There’s a hardcore of 20 vans that’ll park there all day incurring a £25 penalty.

They all pay it though. £125 a week.

Is it doing any harm?
I guess not......
Entry isn't compulsory.
True....

....but most threads lead somewhere and come to some sort of conclusion.....this one cant/wont so I don't see the point. All its doing is getting more heated.
But as you said I don't have to look/post....so I wont!!

Nope, article you included showed that Paris has not banned diesels completely but is delaying a ban on the equivalent of London's older diesels, until 2025, for Paris City, not the greater banlieu.

The ban on diesels in the greater ZFE, which is occupied by 7 million people, has slid back to 2027, and is likely to slide again. The French love deadlines, especially that whooshing noise they make as they slide by. (Remember the Brexit negotiations and "we shall rebuild Notre Dame in time for Ze Olympics?")

Paris postpones tightening of the low emission zone!

Which is fine. It's a tax on the well to do, that's cheaper than all day parking for many.

And they'll just recharge it to their clients in their daily charge rates

Look at that terrible smog !

How about a thread on increasing water bills to eliminate the famous Thames Trout ?
