Stop expanding the ULEZ to all the London boroughs in 2023

My car journey to the office via Marylebone Road takes me 45 minutes.

Travelling on the underground and overground takes 30 minutes door-to-door (the new Eluzabeth Line is fantastic). And it's free as I am over 60.

In the car I am alone, and listening to radio or music. On the tube I am surrounded by coughing people who were no face covering.

Horses for courses. I take the tube most days, and usually take the car only when I have some bulky stuff to carry.

But I'm guessing that many people still use the car simply because it's more convenient, and still affordable for them.
Ah, so you’re this gridlocker.

Will you stop gridlocking London as a result of ULEZ? (I suspect not)

I now have an EV, so (rightly or wrongly) not affected by Congestion Charge or ULEZ. If everyone followed my lead and only used their cars when they have to (as opposed to all the time), traffic and air quality would be much better with no need for CC or ULEZ. But in reality, this behavioural change is unlikely to happen on its own accord.

Quite.

If we really wanted to stop the carcinogenic pollution on the Marylebone Road, Putney High street and Lewisham South Circular, we’d simply ban ICE there.

(And yes it is carcinogenic but far far lower than it was 10, 20, 30, 50 or 100 years ago)

Taxing Cheryl to drive a ULEZ mile across Richmond Park isn’t making a difference. Nor is taxing Bob the Amazon Man £12-50 for driving 100 miles in an nine hour delivery shift is his old truck.

Exactly this.
Where I live, I’m surrounded by fields. It’s the bloody countryside

It’s a tax in a frock. Kahn is desperate for money.

Got this from “the other forum “ it shows late 2023 everyone with an ICE vehicle is going to start paying something

Starting to look like everyone is going to get their cheeks parted

Noticed recently the Glasgow ULEZ markers are now up , did a bit of digging and Euro 6 for diesels and 4 for petrol. Unfortunately for me the Cayenne is a 5 so no more driving into the city center for me from July.

Maybe if they worked on clearing the M8 gridlock , caused by continual ongoing roadworks, then the pollution levels may be slightly reduced around the city center, however that wouldn`t bring in any additional funding.

I am all in favour of road charging based on miles driven / roads used / time-of-day etc, by 2025, but this will require even more ANPR cameras to be installed, which in itself might prove controversial:

So how do we proceed?

Leave it as it is and just tighten up the emissions on ICE vehicles at MOT time.

The stinky diesel cars are on their way out anyway. When they die or fail their MOT’s they’ll be replaced with Euro 6 diesels, clean petrol cars or EV’s.

Mr Bloggs up my road has a Saab 9-3 diesel. Chances are it will only last a year or 2 more so he’ll then go and buy a Euro 6 diesel and hey presto there’s one more dirty car off the road.

What could be simpler?

What's the source of that table, other than the 'other forum'?

Any ideas on how 'low level' the charge for all ICE will be, and how it will be paid?

Let's say it's £2 - are we saying that every single time any ICE car owner will have to log onto the TFL website and pay the £2, even if you travelled for 2 mins to pick up some groceries? Will everybody have an account and log onto an app and have to register on the app? I can't see how the logistics would work in charging every single ICE owner for every single journey/day.

It’s from the ULEZ consultation document , it’s all genuine i saw more of it posted a few days ago on this forum as well I think . Edit …check page 6 of this Thread for more .
No idea on how the low level charge would be paid , I’m guessing the same way as now , you have an account and register your cars registration . It will be automatically paid for most people same as Dartford river crossing and the current central London LEZ thingy

Totally agree
Except as we know that doesn’t raise enough money for the Mayor quick enough

👍
Kahn could secretly get the emissions to pass the MOT’s tightened up so only Euro 6 engines get through. Nobody would ever know and the car owners would have to get cleaner vehicles.
A winner for Kahn and his clean pollution free London and a possible vote winner.

Apart from the one obvious problem.

I think that the rationale behind separating ULEZ from MOT is that the effects of NOx emissions varies in different locations.

The purpose of ULEZ is to reduce the number of highest-polluting cars traveling through London daily. But there's no reason to limit these cars from travelling in less-densly-populated areas of the UK, hence why it's not an MOT test requirement.

Testing for NOx levels (which is what ULEZ is mainly about) @ MOT time requires specialist equipment that MOT testers wouldn’t all be able to get, so it is extremely difficult and unrealistic

So no polluting vehicles in London but it’s ok for everywhere else?? 🤔

Yet some of the highest polluting vehicles in London are the black cabs (Kahn said this himself) but they ply their trade in London without having to pay.

But Kahn is willing to spend tens of millions on cameras, signage etc?
