Hi

My year 2000 ( not 1990 as I origonaly said) E class 320 CDi estate Auto has suddenly stuck in what seems like 1st gear, the tiptronic function does not operate now and the dashboard indicator ( what I can see of it but thats another problem) says that the car is in D for drive. Reverse, Neutral and Park all seem ok.

Has anyone any ideas.......(I m hoping you'll say its a fuse)

Aha You are right, its a V reg so that makes it a 2000 not 1990 ( lucky I was not trying to sell it) any how yes it does have Tiptronic.

Thanks for pointing this out, I will try and alter the original thread

One of two things,, is the MAF faulty and putting the car ín the limp home mode, you could unplug it to test.

Or has the conductor plate gone in the box, and that is not too bad a job

Thanks for the thoughts, can you let me know what the MAF is and where I should unplug it, then I will try this one, it certainly feels like a limp home mode although I was unaware of this feature

Cheers
Mike

wow that was a very quick and super response ..great thanks, I'm out to the garage to unplug my MAF and see if it helps I will let you know

Hiya Malcolm, Its got cold outside!! anyhow I managed to locate the MAF and unplugged it everything stayed the same, I didnt drive the car but I did try out the tiptronic in the garage and there was no change on the display.

Can you tell me any more about the conductor plate ?

many thanks

Mike

I think that you should try and drive the car to see if it is stuck in the limp home mode.

Yor can drive it with the air cleaner off to test.

The conductot plate would want a fault code read out on a STAR scanner

Many thanks, I will unplug the MAF again tomorrow and take the car for a drive to see what happens, I will post the result but thanks for all your help in the meantime.

Also and as I think about things I do recall that it did not want to engage reverse gear direct from Drive (at standstill) earlier today and that I had to go back to park and reselect reverse, then later when I was pulling out in front of a van I suffered a great loss of power possibly due to a gear problem, I was to busy apologising to the white van man to notice the rev counter though but perhaps these events are linked??

Regards

Mike

Its often very hard to tell between and engine fault and a gearbox fault as the torue convertor needs a certain amount of power to perform correctly, when the gearbox does not know what to do they can lock up normally in 2nd, so its always try the cheapest option

Hi

Well I now have the problem sorted, you were right in that the car had gone into get home mode and it was stuck in first gear. Apparently the reason was that there were 27 fault codes in the ECU, I already knew that I had a dodgy oil level sensor but it seems that the gearbox was also picking up a "slip fault". Once the codes were cleared it all seems to drive fine....no guarantees for how long for though. I was quoted £1400 for a recon box or less if they repaired my current one, I was advised to wait and see, if it goes wrong again then to bring it back and the guy can then hone down on the actual code and give me a better idea. Cost for diagnosis and this fix £25 not bad really.

I would recommend A1 premier transmissions in Biggleswade for their helpfulness, they did just what they said they would do and charged me just what they said and all within an hour of calling them.

Malcolm, many thanks for your prompt help on this.
