Tapping Noise W202

Altho the adjusting part is broken -part of the assembly is left so may still function OK. Get someone to operate the throttle and check there is no backwards and forwards movement on the outer throttle sheath. You will have to replace the entire throttle cable if its required as it comes a complete assembly afaik.

Giving a go to flushing and refilling the engine with oil but i will take the filter off as well. Just making sure, the filter is on the right handside of the engine correct?

You can just see the top of it bottom right of your first photo. You will need a decent strap wrench or large oil filter cap socket (halfords)to get it off easily. Remember to renew the large O ring on the filter cap-there will be one supplied with the filter cartridge. Leave the filter on while you use the flushing oil then change it. http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=716.624&CT=M&cat=68Z&SID=18&SGR=045&SGN=02

Update

Right, a bit of an update:

Stage One

1. Have flushed using Wynn's engine flush and drained.

2. Changed filter and changed the oil. Mobil S 10w 40

3. The car though still sounds like is misfiring. I had a short trip and it didn't make a noise but is running like is missing air/petrol or too much air/petrol.
I might still make the noise as I could hear it only when the car is struggling (start at traffic lights, uphill). - I will try this tomorrow

Stage Two

Open the cover to reveal these:

Also when I did open the cover I found out that there was oil there (not just wet, quite a bit). One of the red plugs, the one closest to the windshield had a dried yellowish substance (dried oil) and it was wet with oil:

Sorry about the quality of the latter pictures but I had to use my phone as the camera run out of batteries.

and the socket had oil inside (spark plug had oil around as far as I could see)

The other red plug had loads of oil around it but the socket was dry and so was the plug itself and the spark plug.

I also found that the cover is missing a screw (the one under the plastic air duct), so I hadn't noticed but still how did the oil get there?

Now I do not presume this is normal, but what could be wrong? Also I still have the feeling is the exhaust manifold. I did put my hand to cover the exhaust pipe at the rear and the car runs smoothly/sorts itself out for a few second. (Don't know if this is relevant)

Sorry to be a pain :(

OK it looks as if your cam cover breather is putting out a bit of oil vapour. The oil has got under the HT cover (it should have a seal round the edge) probably due to the missing screw. The breather is connected to the inlet pipe so that any oil vapour should in theory be burnt in the engine. Best to clean everything up with some rags. HANDLE THE HT CONNECTORS AND COILS VERY CAREFULLY TO AVOID DAMAGING ANY INSULATION. Now would be a good time to inspect and renew the plugs also. Take them out and check to see if they have heavy fouling or oil on them indicating they aren't firing properly. You will see each coil services 2 plugs. This may or may not cure/improve your ignition. Its difficult to judge how bad the oil fouling is because all older engines"breathe" a bit and the oil could be the result of many thousands of miles of motoring. Get a new bolt for the cover to stop the oil going under the cover again.

I might need to get a spark plug key as I have lost one that I had. I just dont want to drive the car now as I am afraid more damage will occour. I have cleaned as much as I could. Just wanted to ask, the red connector goes to two spark plugs, which I was talking about. Now where are the rest, should not be 4? Also are the coils the one in black in the pictures above?

The other plugs are fed directly from the connectors directly out of the bottom of the coil pack, each coil feeds two plugs.

As grober has said there will be some oil in the air intake due to the engine breather.
It would be worth removing the coils and drying out the recesses, if oil has got in there so might water.

Covering the exhaust might have been relevent as there could be a crack allowing air in, which will upset the mixture.

I think I have two issues that are giving the same outcome but are separate. Will drop the car at the garage tomorrow to check for cracks and clean the coils myself once that is done. I drove it for a bit now 2-3 miles and while the car is on idle I could smell petrol so definitely is not firing on all cylinders and if I pressed the accelerator it starts to bang/clunk and will lose some power. Nik

By the way thank you to both Grober and Dieselman. Could have looked lost without the advice

Just regarding the pool of oil, that could be dirty water (condensation) and the missing center bolt would weaken the seal, allowing cold air into plug chambre…just a thought. See, http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=36352

It might actually well be. I have a closer look when I get home from work. I have dropped the car at the garage so they can check for cracks on the exhaust manifold

Did you have them tighten the weeping ATF line as well? If not just nip it up with two spanners.

Hi Mate.

I have exactly same problem as you, same oil in the spark plugs. Unfortunately your posts are incomplete.
What did you find out at the garage? And what was the cause of the problem?

If you could message me back that would be great, not sure if i will get a notification if you post reply to your post..

Regards
michael
