The flip side of that is that an early 107 will be either a 350SL , or just possibly a 280SL .
The 350 has possibly the weakest performance of any car in the range ( with the possible exception of the 380 ) and the worst fuel economy by a fair margin ; the 280 is only slightly better .
The second generation cars were much better both on fuel and in performance with a 300SL being the best choice if the former is important to you and the 500 if the latter matters more to you .
If you do any reasonable mileage , I'd imagine that the difference in fuel consumption between that early 350SL and a later 300SL would wipe out the tax cost .
